A Wrinkle In Time Header

Earlier this week we saw our very first look at Ava DuVernay‘s adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time. Madeleine L’Engle’s acclaimed children’s novel of the same name which sees Meg (Storm Reid) going on a cosmic adventure that spans space and time to save her father from an evil force who intends to use his space time travel research for their nefarious deeds. Both DuVernay and Reid were joined by Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Chris Pine, and all shared their thorughts and experiences on the film.

Check out what they had to say and the very first look at the film, below.

DuVernay said she wanted to stay true to the original while also bringing in something new to the table. So what initially brought her to the project was that she found herself a lot in the material, and she felt inspired by the family story that was wrapped in an epic adventure.

In terms of putting the cast together, DuVernay wanted to make a film that looked like the real world. That meant assembling a diverse cast, a cast that was more than happy to accept when the role was offered to them. Reid admits that she was a little nervous at first, but DuVernay was patient with her and allowed her to have creative input on the character. She added the Kaling and Witherspoon were like second mothers to her while on set, and Oprah made her feel comfortable.

Even though Pine was not familiar with the story, he wanted to work with Ava, saying that it was a mix of chemistry and alchemy that made the whole thing work. So within five minutes of meeting her, Pine instantly knew he had to be a part of this epic project.

While Kaling had the challenge of playing a character who only spoke in riddles, she says she learned a lot and was happy that Ava and Lee stressed inclusivity in the film. She even used Jay-Z as an inspiration in her approach to the role.

As for Witherspoon, she was a fan of the book for as long as she could remember, and loved that it was a story about a young girl who goes on an epic adventure to save her dad.

I’ll just get to the bare bones of describing the trailer, but it is epic in scope. The worlds feel maassive and it looks like there is so much to explore. So this teaser trailer just scratches the surface of it all. The trailer played to a contemporary rendition of Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams.” Which based on the visual aspects of the trailer, seems like a very appropriate song to play. It’s colorful and fun, and has the perfect juxtaposition of real-world looks with a sci-fi feel to it. And it all closes out with rays of light ticking like a clock. Plus, those awesome costumes worn by Winfrey, Kaling, Witherspoon, and Pena, this thing looks amazing. Honestly, this one just shot up to one of my most anticipated films of 2018.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peňa, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, André Holland, Rowan Blanchard, and Zach Galifianakis also star.

A Wrinkle in Time opens in theaters March 9th, 2018.
