Production for Disney’s newest live-action film, Dumbo, is currently underway, and director Tim Burton is currently in England shooting the film. So while he had nothing to offer us in terms of footage, he did send everyone at D23 a kind video message saying that he is in the midst of shooting, and could not wait to show us the entire film. Of course, with a video message like that, you don’t expect to see him in just a stuffy room. Instead, he was on board the Casey Jr. engine. He also provided some very cool photos and concept art that gives us an idea of the world that he is creating.
Disney’s Head of Live-Action, Sean Bailey, also confirmed the films cast. Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Eva Green all join the film. Dumbo also introduces Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins in their first film roles. Roshan Seth, DeObia Oparei, Sharon Rooney, Douglas Reith, and Katterli Frauenfelder also join.
Bailey then had the life model Dumbo rolled out onto the stage floor for all attendees to see. But it is the Casey Jr. train and the concept art that tells us a lot about the world that Burton is creating. If you saw Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, then you will recognize some of the aesthetical similarities.
Derek Frey and Ehren Kruger will produce the screenplay written by Kruger.
Here’s a brief plot synopsis:
Disney’s new live-action feature film “Dumbo” introduces Holt Farrier (Farrell), a former circus star who finds his life turned upside down when he returns from the war. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) enlists Holt to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when Holt’s children (Parker and Hobbins) discover that Dumbo can fly, persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Keaton) and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant (Green) swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star.
Dumbo is slated for release on March 29th, 2019.
