Star Wars The Last Jedi image 01

For the past few D23 Expos, Lucasfilm has had at least one Star Wars thing to show attendees. So following the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars: Story, everyone was eagerly awaiting to see some brand new footage from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The Rian Johnson film has been on everyone’s minds since the first trailer popped up at Star Wars Celebration earlier this year. Many are wondering what the title means and if Luke really wants the Jedi Order to end. At the D23 today, the Lucasfilm portion of the live-action panel provided some answers. Check them out below.

Director Rian Johnson came out on stage to talk about this being his first D23, but not the first time that he’s worked for Disney. He told attendees that he worked at on-air promotions for the Disney Channel long before High School Musical was a thing.

As of right now, Johnson is in the process of mixing the film. He then welcomed stars Daisy Ridley, JOhn Boyega, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicio Del Toro.

Boyega was excited about the fight that he was going to have with a formidable opponent. That’s when a shot of him glaring at the droid BB-8 was shown. Everyone got the joke, and then Boyega turned to Christie and there was a stare down of sorts between the two. Christie then commented that while wearing the silver suit was fun, it was so hot that you could cook a casserole in there.

Tran said being on set felt a lot like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and she tried to peek her head in on different sets to see what was going on. In fact, she and Ridley coined the term “WWJB” or “What would John Boyega do?”

Dern was so into her role and she said “pew pew” as she fired her character’s blaster in the film, even though she didn’t need to do that.

Attendees and the cast then saw a new behind the scenes video for the very first time, which was a compilation of metal welding, costume and creature designs, and Ridley praising the film for going in an unexpected direction but still feeling right.

We see Rey doing some rather intense training, but we also see Ridley fight against what looks like three warriors. It’s not clear who she was fighting as this was a behind the scenes shot. Could this be the Knights of the Ren or something much worse? There looks like there will be an underwater sequence as well as Ridley dives into large water tank. There are also large explosions in the Rebel base, almost as if this was a pre-planned attack. During that time we see Resistance fights being hit with a blast as their X-Wings explode. But we also see Finn (Boyega) and Rose (Tran) wearing First Order uniforms. Remeber, the two go on a very important mission in the film, and it looks like that mission has them infiltrating the First Order.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Carrie Fisher, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Mark Hamill.
