Come next year, Marvel Studios will be celebrating their tenth anniversary. Quite an achievement for a superhero movie studio owned by Disney. And what better way for them to commemorate such an occasion then to release the ensemble of ensembles, an Avengers film featuring heroes from not only across the globe but from galaxies far away as well. We were at D23 to see the very first look at Avenger: Infinity War, and as you can imagine, there was a lot to take in and a lot to get excited over. Check out our description of the footage here below.
The first shot sees the Guardians of the Galaxy aboard the new Milano as they fly towards a dangerous destination. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) suggests that they put their mean faces on in anticipation for a possible battle. That’s when we see Thor (Chris Hemsworth) landing on their windshield. Shocked, Rocket (Bradley Cooper) suggests they use their wipers to push Thor off, but instead the God of Thunder is brought in. This is the first time that we’ve seen an Avenger interact with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and it certainly won’t be the last. So after Mantis (Pom Klementieff,) wakes him up, Thor is shocked at where he is and how he got there in the first place. As they try to figure out who each other are, there comes an impending doom that threatens all sentient life as we know it.
Then we see a bunch of clips of various Marvel heroes ranging from Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Vision (Paul Bettany), Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), and so much more. Honestly there was so much going on at once it was hard to take it all in. Especially since they previewed the footage only once.
However, we do see Loki (Tom Hiddleston) offer the Tesseract to an unknown person, and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) walk amongst the rubble in the Collector’s palace. No sign of the collector though, but it is pretty clear who is in possession of these Infinity Stones. As we see Thanos donning the Infinity Gauntlet with two Infinity Stones in stone.
But the heroes know that there is an impending doom coming to Earth, as we overhear Mantis say “Death follows him like a shadow.” That’s when we see a giant circular ship descend upon Earth. And as we see a portal open, Thanos walks out taunting our heroes by saying something like “Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing the universe, but this does put a smile on my face.” That’s a very loose paraphrase.
Among the other important shots that stood out are a Hulkbuster armor in the heat of battle. It looks like it has a slightly new design, but we don’t know who he is fighting. Cap has a grungy beard look as if he hadn’t shaved in months. Vision and Scarlett Witch share an embrace only to be separated and Vision looking stressed – again it’s not clear how this happened.
Thanos showing his authority and power over those weaker than him by palming Thor’s head. Black Widow now has a new look with blonde hair. An incredible battle sequence involving the Winter Soldier in what looked like a savannah. Shots of Stark, Strange, and Wong conversing about Thanos. Peter Parker’s arm hairs standing upright – this might be our first look at the Spider-Sense that was notably absent in the recent Spider-Man: Homecoming. He also gets to wear the new Iron Spider suit that was offered to him at the end of Homecoming. A quick shot of Falcon doing a barrel roll. Again, it happened at such a rapidfire pace, it was hard to get it all down.
But the final shot of the trailer had Thanos making a fist while a celestial body breaks apart in the cosmos. He then throws a punch while pieces of that celestial body rain down like crashing meteors.
Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.
Um, I know re all this everyone’s posting about Thanos etc., but could someone at Geeks PLZ just comment on Bucky’s arm and look? Because, re the Black Panther movie I’m gonna guess, if Bucky is in Wakanda and fighting, then I’m gonna guess it’s T’Challa’s brilliant sister Shuri that gets Bucky a new arm. Maybe. And what did Falcon’s wings look like? E.g. a Tony Stark look or something else? Maybe stuff happened to fast to pay attention, but nobody seems to be mentioning juicy details beyond Cap with a beard and BW being blonde. Love Bucky and Falcon!
