If you lost countless nights of sleep growing up thanks to the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books written by Alvin Schwartz, you know just how crucial the artwork by Stephen Gammell was in planting the seeds deep in your psyche that would later grow into terrible nightmares.
You’re also probably aware that the books were re-released a handful of years ago, complete with brand new, far less haunting artwork. This did not go over well. Fans were clearly outraged. And, as it turns out, that intense disapproval had an impact. The publisher of the books, Harper Collins, has re-released the books yet again, but this time they have Gammell’s original artwork restored.
Here’s a description of the three-book collection:
The three Scary Stories books come together in this paperback box set to form a timeless collection of chillingly scary tales and legends.
Folklorist Alvin Schwartz offers up some of the most alarming tales of horror, dark revenge, and supernatural events of all time.
The paperback books in this box set feature Stephen Gammell’s artwork from the original Scary Stories books. Read if you dare!
Includes Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, More Scary Stories, and Scary Stories 3.
If interested, the book collection with restored original artwork was released last week, and you can get your hands on it over at Amazon right now. If you buy it there, or anywhere else for that matter, just make sure it’s the one released in July of 2017. If you mistakenly grab the one released in 2011, you’re in for some disappointment. One other option, of course, is to pick up copies of the originals being sold around the ‘net.
And let’s not forget, a movie inspired by the books has also been in the works for a while now. Back in 2013 writers from the Saw series were involved with it, and about a year later we found out that Big Fish and Corpse Bride writer John August had been hired to work on the script.
Then, just last year, it was reported that Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone, and Crimson Peak director Guillermo del Toro was developing the project with the potential of also directing.
