‘Captain Marvel’ Gets ‘Gotham City Sirens’ Scribe To Pen Script

Brie Larson Captain Marvel

There’s going to be a bit of a dynamic shift going on with the script for Captain Marvel. For the past few years, Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) were writing the script, which would be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck of Mississippi Grind.

Now it looks like they are bringing in a new writer. According to a report, Gotham City Sirens writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet will now be penning the script. More on this below.

The report comes to us from Deadline, who says LeFauve had to leave to direct the Disney Animation pic Gigantic with Nathan Greno. She was recently promoted to co-director, which meant that she would have more responsibilities on Disney’s take on Jack and the Beanstalk with a Spanish twist. It’s unclear how much was written or if Perlman will stay on board as a co-writer. The report only says Robertson-Dworet would be writing the film. Though, I’m sure more will be revealed as we get closer to the start of production.

We’ve been keeping tabs on Captain Marvel for quite a while. Recently, it was revealed that the origins film would take place in the ’90s, with the title character facing off against the Skrulls. A younger Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) would also have two eyes. Other than that, we don’t know much about the film itself. Hopefully, it will explain why we haven’t seen the Skulls during the course of the MCU and why Captain Marvel has been absent during the events leading up to Avengers: Infinity War. Rumors say that she is stuck in a dimension similar to that of the Quantum Realm, where Jane Van Dyne is currently imprisoned. Of course, that is the rumor.

Getting a new writer this early in the game is just a part of the screenwriting process. Most of the time they are brought in to work out some of the issues a script might have or just improve upon a few things. We just saw an example of this with Star Wars: Episode IX. And since Captain Marvel is coming out in 2019, Marvel still has plenty of time to work things out. So don’t rule out another writer coming on board to do some possible rewrites.

As for Robertson-Dworet, she is best known for her works on the latest Tomb Raider reboot, Dungeons & Dragons, and the upcoming female-led DCEU project Gotham City Sirens, which will be directed by David Ayer. Other credits include Sherlock Holmes 3 and an adaptation of M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand.

Captain Marvel is scheduled to open in theaters on March 8, 2019
