After a long road with some twists and turns, Warner Bros. has finally found a new director for the DC sequel Suicide Squad 2. WB has locked in The Accountant, Warrior, Pride and Glory, and Miracle director Gavin O’Connor for the job.
Previous names attached to the project include Mel Gibson, David Goyer, and Jaume Collet-Serra, who ultimately decided to direct Jungle Cruise for Disney instead.
David Ayer directed the first movie, but decided to jump over to Gotham City Sirens instead of directing the sequel.
O’Connor will also be penning the screenplay along with writing partner Anthony Tambakis.
Original stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto are among the cast who are expected to return. Leto’s character, the Joker, is quite popular with WB lately. Not only is he expected to return for this sequel and appear in Gotham City Sirens, but two additional Joker projects were also recently announced. One is an origins movie with a new actor being cast to play the character—with Leonardo DiCaprio’s name being mentioned earlier this week—and another is a twisted love story focusing on Joker and Harley Quinn with Leto and Robbie expected to reprise their roles.
Suicide Squad 2 is expected to be released sometime in 2019.
