Four time Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams is reportedly in talks to join the cast of Venom, Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff.
Williams would join a cast that so far includes Mad Max: Fury Road and The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy, who will be playing the title role, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Nightcrawler star Riz Ahmed, whose role is not yet known.
Should ink meet paper, Williams is said to be up for the role of a currently unnamed character who works as a district attorney and who could potentially become a love interest for Hardy’s character.
Williams rarely stars in these types of movies, usually appearing in dramas and achieving great things in those roles. Again, she’s already got four Oscar nominations on her resume at the age of 37 (Manchester by the Sea, My Week with Marilyn, Blue Valentine, Brokeback Mountain), and it’s only a matter of time before she brings one home. But every now and then she’ll shake things up, like in 2013 when she appeared in Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful, and it should be fun to see her visit a comic book flick.
The three actors are the only names attached to the project so far. We do know that the film will feature Carnage as the villain, but casting for that role has either not yet happened or has not yet been announced. We should be hearing more soon; the report says production is set to begin next month.
Directing the movie is Ruben Fleischer, whose previous credits include Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less, Gangster Squad, and episodes of Superstore, Santa Clarita Diet, and more. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle writers Scott Rosenberg (High Fidelity, Con Air) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) wrote the screenplay.
