Warning! Spoilers below for Sunday night’s episode of Outlander!

Last week on Outlander, Lord John Grey (David Berry) arrived at Ardsmuir prison, where Jamie (Sam Heughan) was held, the leader of the prisoners. He attempted to connect, rebuffed at first, but Jamie agreed to occasional meetings to better the conditions for the men, especially Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix). When a sick man came spouting words of gold and the “white witch,” Jamie ran away to see what was what. Grey showed affection to Jamie, who shut it down. Lord Grey set Jamie free (of sorts) to work for a family under an assumed name. Claire and Frank (Caitriona Balfe, Tobias Menzies) no longer pretended to have a marriage, but when Frank’s mistress accidentally showed up too early during Claire’s graduation party, they fought. Once Brianna (Sophie Skelton) graduated high school, Frank asked Claire for a divorce and said he thought Brianna would go with him. Frank died in a car accident and Claire said goodbye.

Spoilers below.

Outlander 3.4 “Of Lost Things” review: Roger (Richard Rankin), Brianna and Claire search for records of Jamie and find him at Ardsmuir, until the prison closed in 1756. Brianna teases Roger about his potential girlfriends, and then fixes his car.

Jamie (now called McKenzie) is summoned by Lord Dunsany (Rupert Vansittart). He thinks the war is bygones, but he says his wife won’t be the same. Jamie confesses the 2 children he lost. The lord will not tell his wife, but reminds him that he is still a prisoner. Of the lord’s 2 daughters, one is a spoiled brat and the other… admires Lord Grey, of which Jamie tries to dissuade for obvious reasons. She sees through him, “A cage is still a cage.” The younger is betrothed to an old man. She is upset and chooses Jamie to accompany her on her ride. She sort of looks like Claire. She pretends to be hurt and he drops her in a mud puddle.

Lord Grey visits Jamie to play chess. His brother visits and spills all to Geneva (Hannah James). She blackmails Jamie to take her maidenhead before she is wed to the old man. He curses her, but she will not relent. Since he does not want to take a chance that his Lallybroch family will be hurt, and she knows all, he shows up. Although angry, he is kind, knowing this is an important moment in her life. He gives her a chance to change her mind, but she wants her first time to be “with someone like you.” She says she loves him, but he tells her the difference.

Joe calls Claire. He talks shop with her. Fiona gives Claire Jamie’s mother’s pearls. Brianna confesses to Roger that she is afraid of losing Claire. They kiss. In Scotland, they get a lead but hit a dead end.

Geneva is in distress, about to give birth. It is Jamie’s son. Geneva passes away, but the old man has a knife to the baby. Jamie shot the man and saved Willie. The lady says she will set Jamie free if he wants. he does not want to go because he wants to be near the boy. As the boy gets older, the resemblance is apparent. It is time for Jamie to go. Lord John agrees with the decision. Jamie asks him to raise his son in return for sex. Although he wants Jamie fiercely, he turns him down… honor. Lord John says he will marry Isabelle, make an “adequate husband,” and take care of Willie.

Jamie: “You shall always have my friendship.”

Willie visits Jamie and wants to be a “stinkin’ Papist too.” Jamie baptizes him with a Papist name, James.

Claire gives up the search, and Jamie gives up his son. It’s sadness all around. Brianna and Roger are sad to be apart as well.

Heughan is the shining star of this episode. The 1960s crew is very cool, but the events of this particular time in Jamie’s life is of particular importance. Although a piece of him is missing because Claire is gone, he builds an actual life at the Dunsany estate, including raising his son, Willie. His heart breaks in pieces once again as he has to walk away from his boy. It’s a wonder all this heartbreak has not broken him.

I believe I made mention of the perfect casting choice before, but David Berry really is Lord John Grey sprung from Gabaldon’s pages to life.

Outlander airs Sunday nights at 8:00pm ET on Starz.

  1. Jamie doesn’t relent because of the threat of going back to prison. Watch that part again. He relents because she threatens his family at Lallybroch. This is an important distinction.

  2. You are right. I should have also known that because there was no prison to go back to. Fixed. Thanks!
