Futurama

Though it wasn’t listed on the lineup of things coming to and leaving this month, Hulu has a surprise for its subscribers. Coming soon to the streaming service (soon like today) is Futurama. Every single episode, including the four straight-to-video movies which helped to bring the beloved animated series back to life in 2010.

But while the news will no doubt be exciting to some, it’s not at all surprising. Recently many Netflix subscribers—many of whom routinely fell asleep to episodes each night—were outraged to discover that they would not be renewing their contract with FOX, meaning many shows including Futurama would be disappearing. It was assumed at the time that the show would end up on Hulu, because FOX is a part owner there and it only made sense. And so here we are.

You can find the full announcement below.

HULU (FINALLY) BRINGS BACK FUTURAMA

“My story is a lot like yours, only more interesting “˜cause it involves robots.” -Bender

On Monday, October 16th, the entire Futurama library – including all four films – will make their long-awaited streaming return, only on Hulu.

ABOUT

Matt Groening, the multiple Emmy® Award-winning creator and executive producer of The Simpsons, has hatched another outrageous look at the world, FUTURAMA. But we’re not in Springfield anymore – we’re in New York, a thousand years from now, and it’s like no future you ever imagined!

FRY (voiced by Billy West), a young Everyman, finds himself accidentally transported 1,000 years in the future. Just like right now, life in the future is a complex mix of the wonderful and horrible, where things are still laughable no matter how wild and crazy they get. And against a backdrop of pesky aliens, exasperating robots and malfunctioning gadgets, people still struggle with the same daily anxieties of life and love… and, of course, traffic is still a nightmare!

Having literally escaped his unfulfilled past, Fry uses his newfound sense of freedom to help his friends in the future escape their regimented lives. His companions include LEELA (voiced by Katey Sagal), a beautiful female alien who can kick some serious butt, and BENDER (voiced by John DiMaggio), a hopelessly neurotic assembly line robot. Working together, Fry and his colleagues buck the system in pursuit of happiness. And with each passing day, the future becomes Fry’s home.

With his unique satirical humor and distinctive style, Matt Groening has created another unconventional but lovable family. FUTURAMA explores all the joys and disappointments of human existence, as well as some problems we don’t have to worry about yet, such as what to do when the cell phone implanted in your thumb dials the wrong number. And while the show has a lot to say about today, more than anything FUTURAMA is a celebration of the future at its wildest.

Now comes the great question for Netflix’s Futurama fan subscribers who were among those sad to see the show leave (those who didn’t jump ship as soon as word of the loss of FOX shows surfaced anyway). Do they stick with them, add another monthly subscription fee to their ever-growing collection, or do they drop Netflix and hop over to Hulu now?

Personally I’m not sure I’m ready to make that leap yet; I usually DVR re-runs on Comedy Central (and soon SYFY) so I always have some handy.

But if these episodes are popular enough on Hulu…perhaps they (again, part-owned by FOX) will do what fans have been begging for and Netflix never did: pony up the coin and bring Futurama back to life yet again. If that happens, they’ll no doubt gain many new subscribers. And I shall be among them.
