Over the weekend, we learned that FX has decided to cancel their planned Deadpool animated series from Donald Glover. This came as a shock to many who had hoped to see more of the Merc with a Mouth, especially when it was coming from someone as creative as Glover, who would also be showrunner with his brother Stephen Glover. The series even got a 10 episode order, so there wasn’t anything to be worried about.
While it is not exactly clear why the split happened, Glover wants to make sure that it wasn’t because he was too busy. In fact, he goes as far as mocking the whole situation by releasing pages of a fake “finale” script, which tells us that the series would have been hilarious. More on the story below.
In typical Deadpool fashion, there are a lot of self-deprecating jokes and references to current events. For instance, Deadpool doesn’t want to have Secretary of the U.S. Department of HUD, Ben Carson, operate on him. He even asks if Kenya is the one with the “rhino.” For those that may not know, the last white northern male rhino died last week. There are even references to Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, Black Panther, the Facebook fiasco, and Bitcoin.
All these pop culture references are clear that Glover’s work was sharp and on point, which makes it all the more disappointing that we won’t be getting to see something like this on the small screen.
Deadpool even goes as far as asking, “Do you think they cancelled the show…cause of racism?!” He makes a point of saying “It just feels like everyone wants to do something different, but no one want to do anything different to get it. Doesn’t Marvel have enough feel-good minority shows everyone supports but doesn’t watch? I mean, I think our show woulda been funny. I just wanted a place to be honest. And I guess that place is Freeform.”
So as you can see, there are plenty of jokes to go around, and if you don’t get one, there is probably another one tied into it somewhere. But that quote makes a point of letting everyone know about the current state of diversity and inclusion. In a time where the people are asking for more diversity, inclusion, and better representation, why not move forward with a show that has all of that?
Guess we’re just left with this script. This fun script that has us believe FX is throwing away gold.
