The Boys

We’ve been hearing about an adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson‘s The Boys for quite some time now, but nothing ever came of it for many years.

But that’s since changed. The Boys, which is set in a world where superheroes exist and follows a group of vigilantes who are called in to deal with said superheroes when they get out of line, is currently being adapted into a new series for Amazon. And now a director has been hired to help bring the pilot episode of that series to life. It’s being reported that Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Black Mirror) has signed on to direct the first episode of the planned eight-episode first season.

Here’s a description of the comic from Amazon:

This is going to hurt! In a world where costumed heroes soar through the sky and masked vigilantes prowl the night, someone’s got to make sure the “supes” don’t get out of line. And someone will! Billy Butcher, Wee Hughie, Mother’s Milk, The Frenchman, and The Female are The Boys: A CIA-backed team of very dangerous people, each one dedicated to the struggle against the most dangerous force on Earth – superpower! Some superheroes have to be watched. Some have to be controlled. And some of them – sometimes – need to be taken out of the picture. That’s when you call in The Boys! The Boys Vol. 1: The Name of the Game collects the first six issues of the hit series The Boys by Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Punisher) and drawn by Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan, Wolverine)!

The Boys is executive produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who are also behind the TV adaptation of Ennis’s Preacher. Rogen and Goldberg were going to direct the pilot episode themselves, as they did on Preacher, but ultimately were not able to due to scheduling conflicts. The duo released a statement for the announcement, saying:

“Dan’s a massive fan of the comic like us, and we’re massive fans of his, so we’re excited to have his more talented skill set brought to the show.”

Starring in the series is Karl Urban, Chace Crawford, Jessie T. Usher, Antony Starr, Nathan Mitchell, Dominique McElligott, Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, and Karen Fukuhara, with Eric Kripke (Supernatural, The House with a Clock in Its Walls) writing and handling showrunner duties.

The first season of The Boys is expected to premiere sometime in 2019 on Amazon.
