Go Home, Afton
Afton Morrison Series Book 1
Kindle Edition
By Brent Jones
Publisher: Self-Published via Amazon Digital Services
Release date: June 25, 2018

In Brent Jones‘s Go Home, Afton, a young librarian with a compulsion to kill turns to vigilantism to stop a serial rapist, but a dangerous person from her own past has returned to thwart her efforts.

Afton Morrison is a small-town children’s librarian with an urge to kill. Yes, kill. Ever since a teenage trauma, she’s been plagued with the need to hurt people, prompted on by Animus, the name she’s given to the voice inside her head that represents her darkest desires. Thankfully she’s been able to keep her feelings in check”¦ until now. At 26, she’s finally ready to take her first life. But Afton is really a good person at heart, who’d rather help than harm. That’s why she decides to go the vigilante route, with her first target being an alleged serial rapist who so far has gotten away scott-free. But a dark figure from her own past has suddenly returned, shadowing her and hindering her plans with the possible intention of harming her again.

Afton is clearly inspired by the killer of killers Dexter Morgan from the former Showtime series Dexter, with her constant compulsion to murder, her process of choosing her victims based on their transgressions, and the way she meticulously preps for her deadly deed with massive amounts of plastic wrap. But unlike Dexter, she’s neither trained in forensics nor does she have access to criminal records. She’s just an average person who likes to read”¦ and kill.

Jones presents to us a likable protagonist who is constantly questioning whether she’s actually a psychopath, yet it’s clear that she’s suffering from PTSD and this is her coping mechanism. It’s hard not to root for her “” although, there are times when Animus certainly does go too far, but at least Afton resists (so far). We’re meeting her just as she’s begun to actually live out this double-life, so things don’t exactly go smoothly. Even though she’s a smart, capable, forward-thinker, this is still all-new territory for her.

At 142 pages, Go Home, Afton is an extremely quick read that doesn’t waste any time as it hooks you in immediately as this small-town librarian learns to stalk her prey, and it keeps you interested as she figures out how to balance her life at the library with that of her covert activities. There’s also always the question as to whether her perception of things is actually reality. She wants to do good, but is she really? Since this is a first-person narrative, our storyteller doesn’t know, and therefore, neither do we. It’s a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing. Thankfully, much of the depravity is contained in Afton’s head, so we’re not bombarded with sickening descriptions of violence and death.

I really dug Afton, especially since she’s a librarian (I heart libraries), she’s a vegetarian (so am I), and she has deep love for her goldfish (I love all creatures). Therefore, I hope that later installments of this series have her going to therapy, because this girl truly needs some help, and enrolling in a martial arts class because I really don’t want anything bad to happen to her. I also hope that at some point Afton will reveal her list of best summer reads, because I really do trust her skills as a librarian. Personally, I’d say Go Home, Afton is a perfect addition to your list of summer reads, especially since the story takes place during summer. I actually breezed through the book on this year’s summer solstice while basking in tranquility at one of my city’s community gardens that has a view of the water.

Go Home, Afton, available digitally starting June 25, 2018, is the first novella in Jones’s planned four-part self-published Afton Morrison Series, with each installment releasing every six weeks and the compiled edition scheduled for the end of the year. Book 1 is available for in ebook format right now for only 99 cents, including for the Amazon Kindle.

We all wear masks, and Afton Morrison is no exception.

A small-town librarian with a dark side, Afton, twenty-six, has suppressed violent impulses her entire adult life. Impulses that demand she commit murder.

Blending her urges with reason, Afton stalks a known sexual predator, intending to kill him. But her plan, inspired by true crime and hatched with meticulous care, is interrupted by a mysterious figure from her past. A dangerous man that lurks in the shadows, watching, threatening to turn the huntress into the hunted.

Go Home, Afton is the first of four parts in a new serial thriller by author Brent Jones. Packed with grit and action, The Afton Morrison Series delves into a world of moral ambiguity, delivering audiences an unlikely heroine in the form of a disturbed vigilante murderess.
