It’s 1984, the height of the Cold War. And it’s going to be up to Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) to defuse a hostile situation. But it looks like it won’t be easy for her to accomplish that task. Especially when facing off against someone like Cheetah (Kristen Wiig).
We’ve known that Wonder Woman 1984 will take place during the ’80s, with the Cold War having a role in the film. But we will also see another familiar Wonder Woman villain. Wiig’s Cheetah looks to be one of the more developed DCEU villains. That’s because the timid archaeologist is about to be cursed with dark powers that turns her into one of Diana’s greatest foes. And now the first image of Wiig in the film has been released, which you can see below.
Warner Bros. is being very generous with their marketing campaign for Wonder Woman 1984. We’ve seen a non-spoilerly photo of Diana in a new era, along with one spoiling Steve Trevor’s (Chris Pine) return. But the one person we haven’t seen is Wiig, who plays Barbara Ann Minerva. Until now.
Director Patty Jenkins posted the image of Wiig as Barbara on her personal Twitter account. Though it is just an image of Barbara and the caption doesn’t offer too many details, it and the lighting provides an ominous tone.
We’ve also seen Diana in a museum or museum setting. We saw the character preserve the past in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. That passion is one of the things she has in common with Barbara, who also has a penchant for the past and researching dangerous relics. In fact, it is her passion that leads her on a quest to discover the tribe that covets the powers of the Cheetah. But when a band of marauders kills Barbara’s group and leaves her for dead, a priest, Chuma, the caretaker of the ancient plant god Urzkartaga, helps put her on the path to recovery. This path has disastrous side effects as the ritual turns her into a blood-thirsty beast whenever in Cheetah form.
It should be interesting to see if Jenkins stays true to the source material or if she has a different interpretation of the character. Either option would be good.
Wonder Woman 1984 arrives in theaters on November 1, 2019.
