One of the biggest criticisms of the Transformers film franchise is that it looked nothing like the Transformers fans knew and loved. However, Bumblebee, the first Transformers film spinoff, represents something new and exciting. The teaser trailer gave us a brief look at the fan favorite Autobot’s first mission on Earth, as a VW Bug.
Now Paramount has released a brand new trailer for the film, and it’s filled with even more 80’s references and old school Transformers than you can roll out at. Check it out here below.
Well, it looks like Optimus Prime is sending Bumblebee on a mission where she first meets Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), who is just turning 18 and buying her first car. After discovering what she has just purchased, the two become fast friends. However, the Decepticons also arrive on Earth and will manipulate the humans into believing that Bumblebee is a criminal and must be captured.
Speaking of Decepticons, we also get our first look at Shatter and Dropkick in action. At first, it was reported that Shatter (Angela Bassett) would be a Plymouth Satellite, while Dropkick (Justin Theroux) will be an AMC Javelin. But there’s more. The two happen to be triple changers. Shatter is a jet, while Dropkick is a helicopter. We also get a look at Blitzwing (David Sobolov), who is trying to take out Bumblebee.
Additionally, there are those throwbacks to 80’s films. Shockwave, SoundWave, Ravage, and Optimus Prime in their traditional designs. There’s even that classic transforming sound when they are transforming.
But the one thing that has got me interested in this film is the fact that this thing looks like it has heart. Michael Bay’s Transformers was nothing more than a cluster of sounds crashing into each other with the occasional offensive material. But director Travis Knight is bringing us something more meaningful with this new film. Sure it may be targeted towards kids, but there may be something for older fans as well.
Here’s the official synopsis:
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
Written by Christina Hodson (Unforgettable), Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
