Funny or Die’s awkwardly hilarious Between Two Ferns, hosted by Zach Galifianakis, will be getting its own film. And production has already started.
According to new reports, the film, which will stream on Netflix, is already underway. It’s not clear how the film could work since the comedy bit is designed for a short-segment interview format. But we are getting one. More on the report, below.
The Hollywood Reporter says Scott Aukerman, the co-creator of the comedy program, will direct. The series saw Galifianakis hosting a low-budget interview for public access television. It saw the comedian, as a broad version of himself, ask hilariously uncomfortable questions to celebrities like Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt, Natalie Portman, and Justin Bieber, as well as political figures like President Barrack Obama and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Sources say the film will continue the interview format and feature a line-up that includes Peter Dinklage, David Letterman, Keanu Reeves, and Galifianakis’ Hangover cohorts Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper.
Between Two Ferns made sporadic appearances from 2008 to 2014 on Funny or Die. It then reappeared in 2016, when Galifianakis interviewed Clinton. The show managed to rack up more than 30 million views in 24 hours. It returned again in 2018 with a segment guest-starring Jerry Seinfeld and Cardi B.
It’s not exactly clear why there would be a Between Two Ferns film when the bits work better as short-segment interviews than feature-length films. So why not try to shoot more episodes. That being said, if a film is going to exist, it might as well exist on Netflix.
Of course, we don’t know the contents of the film. It might not be just a film with a bunch of interviews, but a film about interviews with some behind-the-scenes shots in-between those interviews. But that is just speculation on my part.
Or maybe it’s just one practical joke and Netflix is giving Galifianakis his own comedy interview show. We’ll just have to wait and see.
