James Gunn will not be stopped. Although what happened to him this past summer was tragic, losing his place within the MCU, the filmmaker has picked himself up to give us a movie that he had been secretly producing for quite some time. And now we know what that film is. The first trailer for Brightburn was released over the weekend, and it teases of what happens when a bundle of joy from another world turns out to be a full-on nightmare. Check out the trailer here below.
Directed by David Yarovesky, Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks as the mother of a child who literally fell out of the sky. There is an air of mystery that surrounds the child as he is not like any human. The child is even unsure of who he is as he asks Banks’ character who he is. She reassures him that he is a gift from above. She explains to him that he is different from other kids. Unfortunately, there are plenty of signs that show, she may learn to regret taking him into her home.
The film basically asks the question, what if Superman was bad from the start?
Brightburn is shrouded in such mystery that we still don’t know much about the plot. Although the teaser does give us an idea about what to expect from it.
The film was actually supposed to make its first appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con last summer. However, the panel was pulled off the schedule when Gunn was fired from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 after controversial decades-old tweets surfaced. The highly anticipated sequel has since been put on hold and Gunn has gone on to write a new live-action Suicide Squad for DC.
Synopsis:
What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.
Written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and also starring Meredith Hagner, David Denman, and Matt Jones, Brightburn hits theaters May 24, 2019.
