It’s not every day that you get to die on your birthday and then come back to life only to relive the same horrible moment. Universal and Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day was a twisted take on the Groundhog Day concept that turned out to be a hit. As such a sequel was greenlit. Of course, it couldn’t follow the same old plot.
Now it will be up to Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) to rescue her friends from certain death. Only thing is, if she dies, she may not be able to come back to save them. Check out the newest trailer for Happy Death Day 2U, below.
Well, just when Tree Gelbman thought it was all over, she comes to find out, that it’s not. And the only way to react to that is to simply go crazy. Although to change things up, not only is Tree going through the same day over and over again, the babyfaced killer is now going after her and all her friends. However, it looks like she loses her ability to resurrect herself back to life the next day, which makes her self-appointed mission to rescue her friends much more difficult.
So why all the clips of her dying? Well, maybe the film will explain that. But it looks like the new plot will be used to switch things up. But that doesn’t make anything less absurd. That being said, the first was so damn entertaining, why not just go crazier in the sequel. We’ll just have to wait and see how crazy Happy Death Day 2U gets.
The film also stars Israel Broussard, Suraj Sharma, and Ruby Modine.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Jessica Rothe leads the returning cast of HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U, the follow-up to Blumhouse’s (Split, Get Out, The Purge series) surprise 2017 smash hit of riveting, repeating twists and comic turns. This time, our hero Tree Gelbman (Rothe) discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.
Written and directed by Christopher Landon, Happy Death Day 2U opens in theaters on February 14, 2019.
