20th Century Fox has released its first look at Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of 1957’s West Side Story. Based on the Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise film of the same name starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer, this latest iteration of the beloved musical, which takes inspiration from Romeo and Juliet, pairs Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria, respectively. And now we can have an idea of what to expect from the film just by looking at the setting and costume design. Check out the official image here below.

Though it is just one image, which was revealed on Amblin’s Twitter account, it easily tells us everything we need to know about Spielberg’s new film. On the creative side of things, the director reunites with his Lincoln screenwriter Tony Kushner, with Tony Award-winning Jeanine Tesori and Grammy-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan working on the music, while Tony Award winner Justin Peck choreographs the musical numbers.

Spielberg has been flirting with the idea of adapting West Side Story for a very long time, and it will be the first time that he has directed a musical. So it is only fair to say that expectations are very high, but only because of the fact that Spielberg is held in such high regard and West Side Story is such a beloved musical. It is revered as one of the best films of all time, oftentimes used as a pop culture reference in shows and films.

Here is the full list of the cast members from left to right: Jets members Anybodys (Ezra Menas), Mouthpiece (Ben Cook), Action (Sean Harrison Jones); Jet’s leader Riff (Mike Faist); Baby John (Patrick Higgins); Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler); Shark’s leader and Maria’s brother Bernardo (David Alvarez); and Sharks members Quique (Julius Anthony Rubio), Chago (Ricardo Zayas), Chino (Josh Andrés Rivera), Braulio (Sebastian Serra) and Pipo (Carlos Sánchez Falú).

It’s only a matter of time before we get to see a small teaser of the film come out. After all, West Side Story hits theaters in December 18, 2020.
