The Lion King

Disney’s reimagining of their 1994 animated classic The Lion King is set to hit theaters later this month, and in anticipation of the film’s release, the studio has unveiled a brand new batch of photos.

But these aren’t your ordinary photos. Since the film touts some of the most advanced photorealistic technology to date, it matches the cast with the respective characters they are voicing. Check out the images below.

This type of promotion isn’t anything new, really. We’ve seen something very similar to this from Disney when they released The Jungle Book a few years back. Oddly enough, that was also a film that was directed by Jon Favreau. But instead of that kind of photoshoot, this one has the actors meeting the characters that they voice.

These photos include, Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, John Oliver as Zazu, Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari, Florence Kasumba as Shenzi, Eric André as Azizi, with JD McCrary as young Simba, and Shahadi Wright Joseph as young Nala.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Disney’s “The Lion King,” directed by Jon Favreau, journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother””and former heir to the throne””has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. Staying true to the classic story, Favreau utilizes pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring the iconic characters to the big screen in a whole new way. Also featuring James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.

The film also features the voice talents of John Kani as Rafiki, and James Earl Jones, who returns to reprise his role as the voice of Mufasa.

The Lion King opens in theaters on July 19, 2019.
