Sub-Zero In Mortal Kombat 11

The first casting for the latest Mortal Kombat movie has been revealed. It’s being reported that Joe Taslim has landed a role in the movie, with the actor set to play Sub-Zero.

Taslim broke out with a role in the 2011 Indonesian cult action hit The Raid: Redemption. Since then, he’s had roles in Fast & Furious 6, Star Trek Beyond, The Night Comes for Us, and the Cinemax series Warrior.

Unfortunately, there are no details on what story this Mortal Kombat reboot will tell yet.

What we do know is that it will be directed by Simon McQuoid, who is making his feature directorial debut, and that Greg Russo wrote the latest draft of the screenplay. Russo has no released credits yet, but he is also working on the currently untitled Resident Evil reboot, which was announced back in 2017, and a disaster flick titled Category 6.

Producing this latest cinematic take on the games is James Wan, who is best known for directing the original Saw, the first two Insidious movies, the first two Conjuring movies, Furious 7, and Aquaman. As a producer, his credits include most of the Saw movies including the recently announced reboot with Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, most of the Conjuring Universe movies, Lights Out, and Insidious: The Last Key.

Producing alongside Wan is Todd Garner, while Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins are executive producing.

Paul W.S. Anderson directed the first live-action Mortal Kombat movie back in 1995, a few years after the first game in the ultra-violent fighting series was released to much outrage from parents and politicians over its graphic content. That movie was followed by a sequel titled Mortal Kombat: Annihilation two years later. There was also a live-action TV series titled Mortal Kombat: Conquest in 1998, animated movie in 1997 titled Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins, an animated series titled Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm in 1996, Kevin Tancharoen’s popular 2010 live-action short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth (which was made in hopes of convincing Warner Bros. to make a darker, more violent movie) and web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, books, comics, and more based on the games.

No release window for the Mortal Kombat reboot has been announced yet.
