Just a few weeks ago Disney In Depth celebrated this summer’s 15th anniversary of The Princess Diaries, a major commercial hit for Walt Disney Pictures and Garry Marshall, the film’s director.

Regrettably, there was the news this week of Marshall’s death. Having directed seven films for The Walt Disney Company and being responsible for creating a slew of hit shows for ABC during its comedy heyday in the 1970s, Marshall played a substantial role in developing popular content. His passing at age 81 comes across as almost too soon for a man still hard at work, always wanting to produce laughter and happiness.

Stop the digital presses! A Wreck-It Ralph sequel has been officially announced, although ever since John C. Reilly hinted at a sequel in development, everyone has just been waiting for word from the Mouse House itself.

Now it is actually happening. The Walt Disney Animation Studios film, to debut on March 9, 2018 – thus supplanting the previously scheduled Jack and the Beanstalk adaptation called Gigantic, to premiere in November 2018 – will see the return of Ralph, Vanellope, and many more. Will the sequel destroy the competition, proving to naysayers that a further entry in this brand will succeed, and shall it add to viewers’ adoration of the animated movie? I have no doubt that Wreck-It Ralph 2, as it is tentatively called, will absolutely nail it!

Fifteen years have passed since the debut of Disney’s based-on-a-book comedy featuring two of Hollywood’s brightest stars (Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway). The Princess Diaries premiered back in 2001, and would eventually earn a solid $165 million worldwide. “Shut up,” as Princess Mia would say.

It’s not going to be a spoonful of sugar for director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into The Woods) to develop a sequel based on the most acclaimed and respected live-action Disney film of all time: Mary Poppins. After many months of speculation and much anticipation, Disney has officially announced the title and release date for the next chapter of Poppins.

Mary Poppins Returns flies into theaters on December 25, 2018. Will this Christmas debut be a gift worthy of belonging in Jane and Michael’s bedroom, or more like a lump of coal Bert would have likely found in a chimney? This edition of Disney In Depth evaluates the casting, crew, and many elements that will help form the sequel.

Disney In Depth: Detailing The Demise Of ‘Disney Infinity’
space

Disney In Depth Banner

Infinity is apparently far from limitless. The death of the Disney Infinity video game series marks the end of a (short) era that appeared destined for fiscal success. Disney Interactive Studios has long struggled in developing original games that appeal to mass audiences and turn a profit.

Now, with the demise of Disney Infinity, it looks like efforts to carve out a piece of this seemingly lucrative market have been moot. Disney Interactive Studios will no longer self-publish games, instead licensing their properties to third parties. Infinity‘s discontinuation after a mere three years of existence is a sad conclusion to a franchise that reached for the stars, but could not make it.
