Sad news to report this morning: Multiple sources are reporting that legendary Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter passed away yesterday in Zurich, Switzerland. The news was broken by Jenda Derringer, wife of former Winter band mate Rick Derringer, via her Facebook account.

Winter was born John Dawson Winter III in Beaumont, Texas on February 23, 1944. Both he and his brother Edgar Winter, who would also go on to rock-stardom, suffered from albinism. Winter started playing guitar at a very young age and was recording by the time he was 15. In December of 1968, the guitarist gained widespread fame after friend Mike Bloomfield invited him to jam onstage at the Fillmore East. Johnny brought down the house and, as a result, Columbia Records signed him to what was at the time the largest advance ever paid to an artist ($600,000).

Tommy Ramone

Tommy Ramone, whose simple but jackhammer driving backbeat propelled the legendary punk ensemble The Ramones to soaring heights and becoming one of the most influential punk bands of all time, died on Friday in Queens, NY, according to Variety. He was 62.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, and raised in Forest Hills in Queens, NY, Tommy Ramone, whose real name was Erdelyi Tamas, was the last surviving original member of the group, which included singer Joey Ramone, bassist Dee Dee Ramone, and guitarist Johnny Ramone. Erdelyi became a member of the band by accidental proxy back in 1974, the year they formed, and all the musicians opted to take on the surname “Ramone” as stage names. Originally, lead singer and driving force Joey Ramone was relegated to the drum throne, but ultimately couldn’t keep time with the band’s three-chord, yet ultra tempo songs. Erdelyi, who was at first going to be the band’s manager, soon took over drum duties and wound up drumming and co-producing the band’s first three albums, which spawned a slew of memorable tracks, which to this day are now punk folklore: “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend,” (which Erdelyi wrote), “Pinhead,'” “Give Me Shock Treatment,” “Beat on the Brat,” and the band’s signature song, which also showcases in a way their instantly recognizable signature sound, and which was also penned mostly by Erdelyi, “Blitzkrieg Bop.”

Casey Kasem, Longtime Voice Actor and Radio Stalwart, Dies At 82

Casey Kasem

Casey Kasem, who built a personal empire by way of his voice, which he lent to radio, voice over work, and on-camera hosting, died on Sunday at a hospital in Gig Harbor, WA, reports The New York Times. He was 82. The Detroit-born Kasem had long been suffering from Lewy body dementia.

From the voice of the scruffy kid friendly hippie Shaggy on Scooby Doo, who had more in common with his canine titular character — dumb, wide-eyed, and lucky — to his own long-running radio and television program America’s Top 40, in which he implored us to “keep our feet on the ground and to keep reaching for the stars” while regaling us with that current week’s top 40 pop songs on radio, Kasem had a sort of angular, trampoline style to his voice, an instantly tenfold recognizable aural patter. His vocal patterns almost in a way set the template for what a radio DJ styled host should be with his inflections and pauses in his speech patterns, and carved a niche in radio not seen since its early days of domination by luminaries of the medium like Jack Benny or Edward R. Murrow.
