Texas Chain Saw Massacre Director Tobe Hooper

Who will survive and what will be left of them? That is iconic line that graces the movie poster of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, one of the most visceral films ever created; a film that lives on in both infamy and reverence to this day. Its director, horror legend Tobe Hooper, died yesterday in Sherman Oaks, CA, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner who confirmed the news to Variety. No cause of death has been determined yet. He was 74.

Born in Austin, Texas, Hooper made his seminal masterpiece in 1974 for less than $300,000. The film, based on the serial-killing cannibal Ed Gein, tells the story of five friends on a drive through rural Texas to explore the home of the grandfather of Sally (Marilyn Burns) and wheelchair-bound Franklin (Paul A. Partain). They end up encountering a family of cannibals, including the human skin-masked, chain saw-wielding Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen).

Jerry Lewis

Legendary funnyman Jerry Lewis, who for over 70 years made audiences laugh with his wild, crazy humor and became an institution of American entertainment, died this morning at his home in Las Vegas. He was 91.

There is no question that the mere mention of the name Jerry Lewis incites many different opinions in individuals spanning generations, but one thing is clear: regardless of one’s personal taste for the man and his attitude to comedy, there is no denying the sheer power and legend that he exuded, a gravitas that combined old Vaudeville with slapstick and later a slick Las Vegas style, honing elements of Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel, and Jackie Gleason into an amalgam of a rubbery, limber, anything can happen comedy style that people like Jim Carrey were able to bring to a newer generation. This solidified in every way the importance of what Jerry Lewis meant to so many people.

George A. Romero profile image

Tonight marks the return of Games of Thrones, where the primary villains are the White Walkers, a marching army of undead. Today, the man most responsible for making the word “undead” part of the zeitgeist, the Godfather of modern zombie culture, George A. Romero, has died today at 77 after a brief fight with lung cancer.

You can’t look anywhere without seeing the impact the Bronx-born filmmaker had on the modern world. From Game of Thrones to The Walking Dead, to iZombie, television is as full of zombies as the Monroeville Mall was in 1978. In 1968, Romero along with a small band of colleagues created one of the most iconic and influential films of any genre in history, with Night of the Living Dead. In the film, a rag tag group are thrown together in a farmhouse while undead zombies gather outside hungry for human flesh. Hilariously, Romero hated the word “zombie” which he would of course become synonymous with.
