| An Oscar Nominations Observation: Did ‘The Social Network’ Doom Itself? |

The Social Network over the past couple months has been unabashedly accepting every award and congratulatory remark that has been sent its way. It seemed the film was determined to be held in eminence amongst other films that are in awards contention this year. Since the film opened in early October it has been on an irrepressible ascent, exceeding every other film in critical acclaim (according to the online site Metacritic it scored an impressive 95). Satisfaction endured on the film’s behalf all the way up until this past Tuesday morning, where David Fincher‘s Facebook film tallied a total of 8 Oscar nominations. You may say such a particular outing is absolutely superb. But taking into consideration the mentality of students attending Harvard University (like those in The Social Network), 8 is somewhat of a disappointment when you can have many more. Such students anticipate nothing but the best. Given the multitude of accolades The Social Network received, a measly 8 nominations simply cannot be adequately embraced.

| Anne Hathaway & James Franco Selected To Host 83rd Academy Awards |
 |

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science made an interesting announcement today, sharing who will be the host(s) of this year’s 83rd annual Academy Awards ceremony. The quintessential Oscar host is someone with a comedy background that we rarely ever see getting nominated for the awards themselves. Previous hosts like Billy Crystal, John Stewart, and Steve Martin fit this mold, and for the most part, the formula has worked perfectly fine. Recently, however, the Academy has decided to shake things up a bit in hopes of attracting younger audiences. First they hired Hugh Jackman to bring a little flash to the show with more of a song and dance flare, and then semi-retracted to traditional hosts with Steve Martin, though this time he was paired up with Alec Baldwin. Today it was announced that for the upcoming ceremony, the plan is to really step outside of the box. Superstars Anne Hathaway and James Franco will be teaming up to co-host the show together, effectively making them the youngest to host (Hathaway will be youngest to have taken the job) and likely winning the eyes of said younger audience the Academy so desires.

| Video: The Cast Of ‘Piranha 3D’ Pleads Their Case For An Oscar
A new video has been released featuring many of the actors from this weekend’s Piranha 3D. The cast has gathered to make a case for why their new movie deserves at least one Academy Award for their efforts. Best Picture, Best Actor/Actress, Best Animated Feature — they have an argument for why all would be acceptable and deserved. In the video you’ll see Jerry O’Connell (who’s character has some lawsuit trouble stirred up), Adam Scott, Jessica Szohr, Riley Steele, Paul Scheer, and the lovely Kelly Brook (my gods, that accent). Clearly this is just a joke (or is it…), but the video is really, really funny, and well worth a couple minutes of your time — especially if you were able to see the movie this weekend. Once again, there may be what some would consider a spoiler toward the beginning…but again-again, it’s Piranha 3D, folks. Click on over to check out the video now!
