Commemorating Reggae Great Bob Marley's 70th Birthday Share1Love

Reggae legend Bob Marley, who passed away in 1981 at age 36, would have been 70 years old today, February 6, 2015. To commemorate his birthday and honor his vision, the Marley Family has launched the #Share1Love site to raise money to help bring clean, safe drinking water to those in need. People are encouraged to upload videos to the site physically showing “how they share love and kindness” and inspire others to share the love as well; for every video uploaded, the social video playlists network Videoo will donate $1 to the charity: water organization.

Below is an excerpt of the tribute Geeks Of Doom published last year for Marley’s birthday. Visit Remembering Reggae Pioneer Bob Marley On His Birthday to read the full article.

Other plans for the late Jamaican musician’s birthday celebration include album releases, a free concerts, a live streaming concert, a birthday celebration in Jamaica, and events at The Bob Marley Museum. See below after the tribute for more details.

Bob Marley

Today would have been the 69th birthday of Nesta Robert Marley, better known to the masses as Bob Marley, who is a figurehead and immortal iconic image to not only the sounds and sights of Reggae music, which he helped pioneer and make more accessible to the planet, but also as a metaphoric, literal, approachable, and tangible symbol of hope and peace, of positive energy, of having one reach into one’s self and soul and try to pull out all the greatness that one can muster up, with his music and timeless messages.

He wasn’t the first artist to make Reggae music for sure, as there were scores upon scores of artists in his native homeland of Jamaica and beyond those nether regions who also preached and taught the tenets of its colorful bass heavy, hi-hat laden, tick-tock guitar arrangements, infusing a kind of color chart mixture of religion, faith, spirituality, and opinions on the politic of the local, national, global, and universal lands. But Bob Marley became the most well-known artist to come from that place, and the most successful in teaching and preaching it, but most importantly and crucially, never soapboxing or doing it in a holier-than-thou stance, of the messages of peace and love, which in his capable hands, made it rise from the banality of pretentiousness and obviousness on its intrinsic levels to an all-together communal atmosphere which brought him and the listener to a transcendent plane.

Bob Marley

Live, by Bob Marley, the monarch of reggae and all vibrations positive for all people and all time, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5.00.

Instantly, this 1975 live album starts cooking and doesn’t build slowly to fever pitch as most live albums do; it starts that way and stays that way from first note to last. Reggae can sometimes be quickly dismissed as a repetitious form of music, with tight rat-at-tat groove line from a bass guitar, percussive hi-hat and rim shots, snaky clavinets and guitars that swell during the opening and closing within the measures of the songs. It is exactly those details which enhance this album, however, as the urgent messages of the body, mind, and soul politic of the late Bob Marley, still one of the most revered and beloved iconic figures ever to branch from the musical scene, utilize the style to the hilt and squeeze every last drop out of it possible, creating results which not only define the genre, but lift it to the stratosphere as well.

Bob Marley The Anthology

As part of Amazon’s monthly $5 MP3 album deal for June 2012, Bob Marley‘s The Anthology is on sale for only $5.

Not only was Bob Marley the first music superstar to hail from the Third World, he literally changed the entire world by making words like ska, dub, reggae, and Rastafari part of the global lexicon. His legacy of bringing the world’s people together in the name of love and truth lives on today in his music 31 years after he was laid to rest. The Anthology, which contains 45 songs, features some of the earliest recordings of Bob Marley and the Wailers, including the entire Soul Rebels album, which was technically their third but the first one released outside of Jamaica. While you won’t find all the familiar radio hits here, you’ll get a deeper appreciation for the revolution in sound that Bob Marley created in the late ’60s and early ’70s.

Browse the main sale page to see the other 99 albums on sale for only $5 each in MP3 format through the end of June 2012.
