The second album by the Latin/jazz/funk/rock hybrid ensemble Santana, entitled Abraxas, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5. (The CD is currently only $6.99.)
Released about a year after their starmaking and now legendary performance at the Woodstock Festival in late summer 1969, Abraxas now stands and is regarded as one of the most popular records released by the still-going guitarist Carlos Santana, who during the time employed a multi-racial band which sported his last name. Almost every track sizzles with a swinging fervor guaranteed to keep you moving while grooving at the same time. Much of this music is now familiar to stalwarts of classic rock radio like “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va,” but the tracks “Se A Cabo,” the beautifully haunting, quiet, and guitar tour-de-force “Samba Pa Ti,” and the wonderful rocker “Hope You Are Feeling Better” hold equal weight and sonic verve. 12 tracks in all, including 3 live performances not on the original release.
