Moana logo

At the D23 Expo on Friday, Walt Disney Animation Studios presented the South Pacific-set Moana, which follows the title navigator as she sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her journey she teams up with the legendary demi-god Maui to traverse the open ocean on a voyage where they will encounter enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds, and ancient folklore.

Moana takes places 2,000 years before our time in the South Pacific. Our title hero shares a special bond with the ocean and it is that bond drives her to be a navigator, a once-proud family tradition that mysterious has gone unpracticed. She then sets out to be that wayfinder against her father’s wishes, and takes her animal friends — a pig named Pua and a cranky rooster named Hei Hei — along her journey. Then there’s the meet-up with the demi-god Maui. More on him later.

The Good Dinosaur

The first Pixar film to be presented at Disney’s D23 Expo on Friday during the studio’s portion of the animation panel was The Good Dinosaur. Peter Sohn (Partly Cloudy) makes his feature directing debut on Pixar’s first prehistoric film about Arlo, an apatosaurus who becomes separated from his family, and sets off on a journey that will make him grow stronger physically and as a dinosaur.

In The Good Dinosaur, our lead character Arlo is not as strong as his dinosaur siblings, drawing his strength from his father. Unfortunately, his father passes on, and we learn that Arlo eventually becomes separated from his family. The clip that was shown reveals the treacherous waters that nearly drown him. Luckily, he is able to be washed ashore, where he eventually comes across a human named Spot.

Gigantic First-Look

At D23 Expo 2015 yesterday, as the presentations continued to roll out, John Lasseter excitedly talked about Disney Animation Studios’ next project, a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. To put a twist on the fairy tale classic, Lasseter revealed that the film wouldn’t be set in a fairy tale land, but rather it would take place in Spain during the early “Age of Exploration,” a seemingly fitting setting for a film about exploring areas unknown/unexplored. Like the recent Disney fairy tale films, this one wouldn’t be called Jack and the Beanstalk, instead it would be called Gigantic. It was also confirmed that Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the music team that brought us the Academy Award Winning Frozen, would also write new songs for the film.

More on the story below.

Finding Dory

After a short-lived stint with live-action films, Andrew Stanton returns home to direct Finding Dory, a sequel to the fan favorite Finding Nemo. Angus MacLane (Toy Story of Terror) joins him as co-director. Rather than just have another story about a missing fish, the follow-up changes a few things up by making Dory go missing after realizing that she got separated from her family after being hit with short-term memory loss. Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks will reprise their voice roles as Dory and Marlin respectively, with Hayden Rolence replacing Alexander Gould as Nemo.

During the Walt Disney Animation Studios presentation at the D23 Expo on Friday, we learned that Finding Dory will be adding Ty Burrell (Modern Family) as Bailey, a beluga white whale, Ed O’Neill (Modern Family) an octopus with a missing arm, and Kaitlin Olson (Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as a whale shark. More here below on their characters plus a description of the footage that was shown at the panel.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens BB-8

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet.” In Star Wars, we’ve come across many interesting names, much of them having some sort of symbolism attached. Luke Skywalker wasn’t too subtle. Neither was Han Solo. But in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we see that J.J. Abrams didn’t attach any meanings to his character names like Finn, Dey, or Poe Dameron, General Hux, Captain Phasma, and BB-8. So like the trailers that have been released so far, we don’t know much about these new characters, other than Kylo Ren.

EW’s Star Wars coverage blitz isn’t quite done yet, and with the D23 Expo just days away, expect more news on the highly anticipated sequel to come out. In their latest report, Abrams explains the meanings behind the character names, some of which may actually surprise you. More on this below.
