Star Wars: The Force Awakens Kylo Ren

This week brought the very first TV spot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The ad featured one piece of new footage, but it was exciting enough to get fans ready for what we thought was going to be another huge panel for Disney’s upcoming D23 Expo. Then director J.J. Abrams confirmed that there would be no new footage shown.

So yes, there will probably be nothing to report on, generally when it comes to any one of the panels at D23, the cast just reminisce about spending their younger days at Disneyland or how they dream of going their because they’ve never been. Whatever the case, just don’t expect to see anything new from The Force Awakens. But to make up for it all, Disney has released a bunch of new images from the film featuring our first looks at General Hux (Domnhall Gleeson), a close-up at Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in action, C-3PO with a red arm, and much more. Check out all the photos here below.

Disney skips San Diego Comic-Con every other year for their own mega Disney fan convention, the D23 Expo. Happening every odd year, the D23 Expo is an event that showcases everything about Disney, from their own studio, to Pixar, to Marvel, and now Lucasfilm. So with the studio notably absent from this year’s Comic-Con, one would think they would reserve all the new footage for their own panels, especially since Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and Marvel weren’t there. The studio did, however, share some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the Con, which did confirm a few things like Daisy Ridley’s Rey piloting the Millennium Falcon.

However, there is some unfortunate news to report. Even though Star Wars will have a presence at the D23 Expo this weekend, don’t expect to see any new footage or behind-the-scenes stuff during the live-action panel. More on this story below.

For years, the Marvel Studios Hall H panel has been the hottest ticket in town for attendees at the San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel has used the panel to make huge announcements in regards to casting and development of their projects for film and television, and to debut completed footage from eagerly anticipated features. Once the studio treated their audience at the 2007 Comic-Con the world premiere of the first Iron Man trailer, there was no question who was going to rule the convention for years to come. The incredible buzz that emerged from every Marvel Hall H panel helped to increase awareness and anticipation for their upcoming blockbusters and dominate social media and popular culture at large.

But that’s all about to change. When Comic-Con commences with its annual takeover of San Diego next month, Marvel Studios won’t be present.

Disney’s D23 Expo 2013 took over the Anaheim Convention Center one year ago this weekend. Tens of thousands of Disney fans gathered in the monstrous venue to peek into Disney’s future films and theme park creations, as well as to reflect on the company’s inspired history of brands and products. We at Geeks of Doom brought you live coverage of the event that included videos, previews of upcoming movies, and tours of exhibits.

Much has changed since the event, in terms of how certain properties evolved. This Disney In Depth reflects on the D23 Expo, based on what worked best, what deemed disappointing and how next year’s event can be even better.
