First Man covers man’s epic journey to the moon at the peak of the space race of the 1960s. It’s a bit of a step away for Damien Chazelle, who is better known for music-based films like Whiplash and La La Land, but one that plays to his strengths. A film about characters making great sacrifices.
Not only that, but it also succeeds on a technical level. Close-up shots and the shaky cam brings audiences closer to the story and allows them to see physical and emotional toll these NASA missions have on the crew. Additionally, the cinematography, especially in the IMAX sequences, displays the grandeur of the collective effort to not only get man on the moon but also its successful landing. The problem is, the film suffers from a by-the-numbers story that does very little to engage with its audience. Check out my full review of the film below.

Damien Chazelle‘s La La Land has captivated audiences with its elegant and sunny musical numbers and gorgeous shots of Los Angeles. But now he can look forward to work on a surprising new project that will have him reunite with one of his La La Land stars, which will require far less singing and jazz piano playing.

La La Land
Director: Damien Chazelle
Screenwriter: Damien Chazelle
Cast: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, J. K. Simmons
Distributor: Summit Entertainment
Rated PG-13 | 128 minutes
Release Date: December 9, 2016
There’s really no simple way to put this, but La La Land is one of those rare, unforgettable movie going experiences that will be talked about for years to come. And that doesn’t even sum up how good it is. Damien Chazelle‘s follow-up to Whiplash reminds us of why we go to the movies, and believe me, this is a movie that needs to be seen in a theater.
The film pays homage to the days of Hollywood where Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers graced the screen with beautiful songs and elegant dances. But it is also a love letter to the luster and sparkle of Los Angeles, which attracts the hopeless romantics and the dreamers hoping to find love and reach for the stars, all the while learning that the city can also be crushing and unforgiving. In the end, Chazelle’s latest film is a true work of art that cannot be missed. Check out the full review below.
