Watain Band Photo 2013

This week’s Black Metal Friday track comes to us courtesy of the Swedish wolf pack. Watain took their name from the title of a song by pioneering American black metal unit Von. A couple of members of the band also played briefly with the late, great Jon Nödtveidt in the legendary Dissection. Watain carry forth today with the philosophy of theistic Satanism that Dissection championed. Both bands have close ties to the Temple of the Black Light, an extremely secretive sect of theistic Satanists that originally went by the name of the Misanthropic Luciferian Order (MLO). Watain’s live show is as much a black mass ritual as it is a music event. In fact, they caused quite a stir a few years back when TMZ reported that the band had sprayed audience members with pig’s blood during a concert in Brooklyn, NY.

Dissection broke up in 1997 when Nödtveidt was convicted for his part in the murder of a homosexual man in a Göteborg park. He received a 10-year prison sentence, of which he served six. Upon emerging from prison, he would resurrect the band with new members who would be “able to “stand behind and live up to the demands of Dissection’s Satanic concept.” This would be the lineup that would record the final Dissection album, the 2006 masterpiece Reinkaos.
