‘SNL’: ‘Star Trek’ Leonard Nimoy Tribute; Dakota Johnson’s Parents & more (Video)

SNL Star Trek Worf M.D.

During last night’s Saturday Night Live, hosted by Fifty Shades Of Grey star Dakota Johnson, the show paid tribute to the late Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy, who passed away on Friday.

In a sketch titled “Emergency Room,” Kenan Thompson pays a doctor who gets called into work straight from a Trek convention dressed as Worf, the Klingon security chief from Star Trek: The Next Generation. At the end of the skit, Dr. Worf gives the Vulcan salute — the signal made famous by Nimoy’s Mr. Spock — before the screen showed an image of Nimoy in the original series giving the salute. (While Nimoy was known as part of the original Star Trek series, he did have a notable guest-star spot on TNG.)

Watch the sketch here below, along with other highlight videos from the episode.

From Dusk Till Dawn TV Series

Fledgling cable channel El Rey Network is set to premiere the new 10-episode television series From Dusk Till Dawn next week. The series is the first entry into serialized television for Robert Rodriguez, who directed the original 1996 movie of the same name and which the show takes its premise from.

Just like the movie, the series will take place over the course of about a day and follow two bank robbing brothers, Seth and Richie, who make for the border with a family they’ve taken hostage. When they make a detour at a strip club, all hell breaks loose after they discover the club is inhabited by vampires. Since the twist of the original film is well-known, it will be interesting to see how the series draws out the plot while still keeping within the same time frame.

SDCC 2012: Django Unchained panel

Django Unchained, the sixth film from famed director-by-numbers with an original twist of classic cinema wunderkind Quentin Tarantino, opened the Saturday festivities in Hall H today at San Diego Comic-Con. Highly anticipated, the film, which is Tarantino’s nod to the seminal spaghetti western genre which found its peak in the 1960s but containing the urban spice and flavor he’s most known for injecting into his productions, opens in theaters nationwide this Christmas.

A restless crowd awaited the panel, some of whom had waited outside since the wee hours of the morning. Finally at about 11:30AM, the lights went down to thunderous and ear splitting applause. There is no question that this production, not only among the large contingent of the proudly geeked out, comic booked, graphic novel ink running through their veins crowd, but also among millions of movie goers as well, is one of the most anticipated releases of the 2012 movie year.

Check Out The First Poster For Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino‘s upcoming “southern” Django Unchained won’t be hitting theaters until Christmas, but in the meantime the Weinstein Company and Columbia Pictures have released the film’s first poster.

You can check it out here below.

No cruddy Photoshop hack work here folks, this is the real deal. Tarantino has spoken many times in the past about his unabashed love for Italian spaghetti westerns and how they have influenced his own style of filmmaking. Several of his recent films, including Kill Bill V.2 and Inglourious Basterds, have worn that influence with pride. Tarantino has even used music score cues composed for the best Italian westerns by the great Ennio Morricone on the soundtracks of some of his past features. Thus, it’s very fitting that the poster for Django Unchained would recall the minimalist movie poster style of the 1960’s when directors like Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci, and Enzo G. Castellari were revered as cinematic gods to western fans and young movie geeks like Tarantino who were just itching for the sweaty, bloody thrills they a spaghetti western could deliver without fail.

Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo Re-Team For ‘Machete Kills’

Machete

Looks like the wrong Mexican is about to fucked with again.

It was nearly two years ago when fiercely independent filmmaker Robert Rodriguez turned his fake Grindhouse trailer Machete into a full-blown feature film top-loaded with gratuitous female nudity, gleefully gory comic book action, and an absurd all-star cast including Robert DeNiro, Don Johnson, Lindsay Lohan, and Cheech Marin. The entire concept of Machete was built around legendary tough guy character actor Danny Trejo, who reprised the title role that has elevated him to the status of an action icon in Rodriguez’s 2010 B-movie epic that grossed $44 million globally from a $10.5 million budget and did excellent business on DVD and Blu-ray.

Django Unchained

Special effects make-up wizard Greg Nicotero (the “N” in KNB EFX) has become a close collaborator of writer-director Quentin Tarantino after working his FX magic on many of the iconoclastic filmmaker’s best known works including Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglourious Basterds.

Nicotero spoke with MTV about working with Tarantino on the director’s latest film, Django Unchained, recently during a Television Critics Association event for AMC’s The Walking Dead, on which he serves as effects supervisor and co-executive producer. ‘Borat’ Star Sacha Baron Cohen Lands Small Role In Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

Sacha Baron Cohen

One of the many things that director Quentin Tarantino is known for is putting together great casts for his movies; even for some of the smaller characters he has, such as Mike Myers in Inglourious Basterds for example. It sounded strange when first reported, but worked out great in the final product.

Perhaps not quite as strange as that particular casting, it’s being reported that Tarantino has chosen Sacha Baron Cohen for a small role in his upcoming movie, Django Unchained.
