Back in January we reported that Warner Bros. was in negotiations with Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment to remake Joe Dante‘s 1984 holiday horror-comedy classic Gremlins. The negotiations must have worked out because the studio is moving full speed ahead on the remake and they have already tapped a well-known name in the horror genre to take on producing duties.

Seth Grahame-Smith, the author of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, will produce the Gremlins reboot alongside David Katzenberg. Most recently Grahame-Smith adapted Vampire Hunter into a feature film released last year and worked on the script for a Beetlejuice sequel that Tim Burton may still direct. Burton, who produced Vampire Hunter for director Timur Bekmambetov, also collaborated with Grahame-Smith on his Dark Shadows movie that belly flopped at the box office last May. The writer was also retained by Fox to rewrite their long-gestating Fantastic Four reboot that Josh Trank is still on board to direct.

Among the many beloved movies and movie franchises we’ve heard listed off as potential candidates for the remake or reboot treatment, the 1984 horror-comedy classic Gremlins is one of them. Back in 2009 there was even word that a possible Gremlins 3 might be happening. Thankfully, as of this very moment, it’s also one of the lucky few that has yet to go under the knife.

But it’s hard to say how long that will last. According to sources, Warner Brothers is in some form of negotiations with Gremlins producer Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to try and remake the movie.

The folks over at MarketSaw have been quite busy as of late. Not one but two of their tippy-top inside sources have chirped some information about Ghostbusters 3 and Gremlins 3 both wanting to join the “cool kids” of this 3D epidemic.

When it comes to Ghostbuster 3, we’ve heard over and over that it was indeed being made and that the whole cast would be returning. We still have zero solid proof of any of this, but because we’ve heard it so often, it has evolved to semi-fact. A source from none other than George Lucas‘s Industrial Light & Magic has apparently whispered that the project is still moving full-steam ahead and that they’re also looking to shoot it in 3D. This is of course no shocking revelation; almost all movies these days are either developed around the technology or given the multi-dimensional makeover after-the-fact. If they are going to make another Ghostbusters, they might as well use this popular format to ensure a nice box office run.

In this time of taking the beloved movies of our past and remaking every single one of them (some successfully; most in painfully failing fashion), it goes with all common logic that the titles that aren’t being remade, would go ahead and make a sequel. After years of talking about a third Ghostbusters movie that we assumed would never come, it’s officially in motion; and now comes word that the sometimes talked about Gremlins 3 may be on the way, as well.

As we all know, Gremlins is about little creatures called Mogwai that have strict rules against sunlight, feeding them after midnight, and getting them wet. Breaking these rules can either kill them, or cause a terrifying transformation into little green monsters that will terrorize whoever them come into contact with. The first film is a classic in which the creatures destroy a little town at Christmas, while the sequel was a little less classic and had them taking over a gigantic business complex along with new, genetically mutated Gremlins who can speak and fly.

Both creator Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante chimed in on word that the movie might take place.
