Directed by Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf), 2006’s Silent Hill is an adaptation of Konami’s 1999 survival horror video game of the same name. Written by Gans and Roger Avary (Beowulf), the film stars Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black, Rogue) as Rose, a woman searching for her missing daughter (Jodelle Ferland) in the abandoned town of Silent Hill.

A ghost town for 30 years, Silent Hill was the site of a massive coal-seam fire. Now, it exists as a town trapped in a dark dream, occupied by damned souls and hideous monsters. Like the Playstation game, the film incorporates elements of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat, while building dread through its eerie atmosphere.

Shudder Visitations banner

Shudder is bringing it this June, scaring audiences with tons of new additions to their plentiful horror catalogue along with plenty of new original content. Joe Bob Briggs returned for a drive-in overnight marathon last summer that literally broke the internet and the fan support swelled from a one-off special, into holiday marathons and finally a full weekly double feature on Friday nights. While you are waiting for Joe Bob and Darcy the Mailgirl to return, Shudder is loading up the schedule in June.

Jeremy Holm interview

This week on May 9th, Jenn Wexler’s indie punk horror film The Ranger premieres on AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder. The film debuted last summer and ran through the festival circuit. Wexler, who cut her teeth producing at Glass Eye Pix, co-wrote the script with Giaco Furino and the film feels like Wolf Creek by way of Return of the Living Dead. A film called The Ranger is only as strong as its titular villain and that role went to veteran actor Jeremy Holm (House of Cards, Mr. Robot). I got a chance to speak with him as the film prepares to make its streaming debut.

Last year, several Shudder exclusives made my year-end Top Horror films, including Mandy, Revenge, Terrified, Satan’s Slaves, and The Witch in the Window. After recently acquiring the rights to Japanese zom-com One Cut of the Dead, the network just acquired all the rights to Mexican horror film, Tigers Are Not Afraid by writer/director Issa Lopez.
