Overall I thought 2019 was a great year for film all around and horror did not disappoint. There was great horror everywhere you looked in 2019. Mainstream horror hit the theaters and the indie horror scene continued to grow and improve. The streaming world made amazing contributions to horror with Netflix producing several great movies and Shudder continuing to dominate the genre with their Shudder Exclusives and foreign imports. And I need to shout out Hulu and Blumhouse for their spectacular Into the Dark series, in which the streaming service puts out a new seasonal horror film every month. So let’s jump in and see which horror films made the cut…

One of the most anticipated events for horror fans this year, the reimagining of Creepshow debuted last night on Shudder. As a lifelong fan of horror anthologies from the original Creepshow films (1982 and 1987) to Tales from the Crypt and Trick “˜r Treat, this original series had me super excited, and I’m happy to say it did not disappoint.

Coming full circle on his amazing career, Greg Nicotero acts as executive producer of the streaming series and directed the first story of the pilot episode. Each of the eight episodes consists of two horror shorts. This Creepshow pays homage to the original while adding some new flair for an overall fun and creepy horror experience. We even get an updated Creeper in the wraparound finding Creepshow comics in a familiar crate.

James Wan will be coming back to the genre that he is very familiar with and successful in: horror. After taking a break from the genre that launched his career to enter the action-blockbuster realm with 2018’s Aquaman, Wan will reportedly be returning with a new and original horror effort. Amazon’s horror streaming service Shudder continues to offer the best selection to fans of genre programming. After a successful showing earlier this month at San Diego Comic-Con, which saw the panel and trailer release for their upcoming Creepshow series headed by Greg Nicotero as well as a preview of the highly anticipated film Tiger Are Not Afraid by Issa Lopez, the streaming service is ready to continue heating up the summer as we head to August 2019.

In this year’s Pet Sematary, the filmmakers have created a new adaptation of Stephen King‘s best-selling supernatural horror novel of the same name and, once again, the point that “sometimes dead is better” is driven home.

As with King’s book and the 1989 feature he adapted for director by Mary Lambert, the story centers on Dr. Louis Creed, who moves his family from a big city to small town. Hoping his new home in the woods will give his family a more peaceful existence, their lives become anything but after he discovers a mysterious burial ground on his new property.
