You know, BOOM! Studios should’ve just named Steed & PeelThe Avengers“. I mean, c’mon, that’s the actual name of the television show that this comic is based on, so they wouldn’t technically be lying. And it would have sold much better, and then a lot more people would be exposed to this fun little comic. Just a suggestion. This MAY be why I’m not in the marketing field.

I’ve been in love with this series since issue #1. It’s a nice, charming mystery/spy thriller that never takes itself seriously, manages to throw in a lot of humor without turning the book into a comedy, and there’s plenty of cliffhangers, page-turners, and such that make it really enjoyable.

I may have stated this in a previous review, but I’ve never seen The Avengers television show that the Steed & Mrs. Peel comic book series is based on. But, after reading Steed & Mrs. Peel #3 I think that I’m going to add it to my Netflix queue.

For those looking for a Grant Morrison story, this really isn’t that. Yes, he did write the book, but this isn’t “Grant Morrison’s Steed & Mrs. Peel!!!”. It’s Steed & Mrs. Peel written by Grant Morrison. What it is, is a charming, interesting, spy thriller with a lot of heart. You can tell that Morrison had a fondness for the show by the way he writes the characters and the story in general.

I’ve never seen an episode of The Avengers TV show which this comic is based on, and I’ve never been a huge Grant Morrison fan. So, why did I ask to review Steed And Mrs. Peel #1? For something different. Thankfully, although I was a little confused at times, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Nothing really needs to be said about writer Grant Morrison, so I’m not going to. As I stated before, I’m not at all familiar with The Avengers television series, but I really don’t think that it hurt my enjoyment of the book at all. Granted, there were a few things that I didn’t appreciate like, somebody who had been a fan of the TV show, but all in all, it’s a great mystery/spy story.
