Random Timey Wimey Thoughts…
One Whovian Relives ‘Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor’

After so long a wait, the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who is here – The Day of the Doctor has come and gone, but will never be forgotten by Whovians in a long time. The big episode, written by Steven Moffat, has sent ripples through the fan community – with hugely positive reviews floating around the place.

Positive reviews for an anniversary episode of Doctor Who – now THAT must be a first. The previous anniversary specials – The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, Silver Nemesis – are great in retrospect, from a nostalgic point of view; though all seemed to suffer from some unenthusiastic initial reactions from fans and critics alike – as well as cast and crew, too.

Not so for The Day of the Doctor, which aired globally on November 23, 2013. Mind you, this is not really a review, more a collection of random timey wimey thoughts in reaction to the new episode and its significance in the history of Doctor Who.

And bear in mind, in the words of River Song: Spoilers! They ARE below, so consider yourself alerted.

Immortals Cover Poster - Relativity MediaImmortals

Directed by Tarsem Singh
Starring Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Luke Evans, Mickey Rourke, John Hurt
Relativity Media
Originally Released: November 11, 2011

Coupled with delightful visuals and unreal effects, Immortals is a fantasy, with a reasonable cast and a good dash of battle gore. While it takes the lead from the likes of 300, Troy, and Clash Of The Titans; it also unfortunately butchers the original mythology upon which it is ostensibly based, taking the phrase "loosely based" to new levels of bullshittery.

Immortals follows the legend of Theseus (Henry Cavill), the founder-hero from Greek mythology, responsible for the formation and consolidation of Athens – and eventually Greece as a power in the ancient world. Centuries after the war of the Immortals, evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) seeks the Epirus Bow, the only weapon that could possibly free the evil Titans, antagonists of the Gods.

A Hero’s Journey, Immortals depicts Theseus’ rise to prominence, a reluctant mortal who would stand by the sides of Gods – and eventually fight in their names. In a blood-soaked battle that would determine the conceptualization of "souls" in Greek culture, the stakes are high – and may spell doom not only for the mortals, but for Immortal Gods as well.

The Doctor Who TARDISblend

After many months of speculation, the BBC announced today that their next Doctor for the long-loved Doctor Who will be none other than the brilliant Peter Capaldi. The reveal has been perhaps the most positive announcement for the BBC and Doctor Who in its entire 50-year history, with only small amounts of criticism being drowned out by the praise from fans online.

During TARDISblend 67, we are joined by special guest Andrew Sorcini of The Drill Down, and we discuss our reactions to the announcement, and the potential we face in future episodes. We also examine what is to come involving Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith, David Tennant, and John Hurt in the 50th Anniversary and Christmas Specials.

Later, Andy also gives us the rundown of his Doctor Who experiences at San Diego Comic-Con, including some of the reveals surrounding An Adventure In Space And Time! All this and more on the latest TARDISblend!

Peter Capaldi Announced As The Next Doctor For ‘Doctor Who’

or is he the Thirteenth Doctor?

After months of rumors and speculation among fans of Doctor Who, amped by odds placed online by bookies in the UK, the BBC has finally announced Matt Smith’s successor. Peter Capaldi is now the next Doctor to take the helm of the TARDIS, and the resulting announcement will be sure to spur much discussion among fans online.

Peter Capaldi is no stranger to the Whoniverse. He had a role in The Fires Of Pompeii, and also played politician John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children Of Earth. It’s not unprecedented for an actor previously in Doctor Who to land the title role – Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor, is one famous example of this. What is surprising though is that Capaldi was the top pick of the bookies, marking perhaps the first time they got it right!

Snowpiercer Header

Snowpiercer, The Host director Bong Joon-ho‘s first English-language directed film, will open in Korean theaters on August 1, but the film has yet to receive a U.S. release date. We’ve already seen concept art pieces revealing what the world looks like outside of the train, and some pieces that give us an inside look too. Early promotional items from The Weinstein Company suggested that the film could open some time later this summer. But with the first trailer for the film having just debuted, it looks like that tentative release will be pushed back a few more months.

The film takes place on a train that runs around a now icy dystopian earth. Each car presents a social class, the further back you are on that train, the lower the class. The trailer gives us our first hand look at what it is like to live aboard the Snowpiercer. Chris Evans is a resident of one of the lower class cars, and he leads a resistance group that will break through each car until they reach the engine, where darker secrets lie. Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Alison Pill, Ed Harris, Octavia Spencer, Kang-ho Song, and Ko Asung, also star.

Check out the new trailer below.

Whovian heads exploded left and right over the weekend with the announcement from the BBC and Matt Smith that the current Time Lord will be departing from the popular and long-lived series. The announcement was made a few weeks following the season finale of Series 7, The Name Of The Doctor, which concluded with the earth-shattering revelation that…

TARDISblend 50th Anniversary Header

The long-awaited season finale of Doctor Who series 7 is here, a climax that showrunner Steven Moffat and the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) have been racing towards (or running from?) for quite some time: “The Name Of The Doctor.” From the prophecy uttered, we witness the fall of the Eleventh, as the Doctor is forced to go to the place he must never go: Trenzalore – to a confrontation that will change everything forever for both the Doctor and for his companion Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) in which his greatest secret is finally revealed…

During TARDISblend 66, we discuss the major gamechanging spoilers that came out in force during the season finale, but also look at what it means for the upcoming 50th Anniversary Special. We touch on the role of River Song (Alex Kingston) in this episode, and the inferential implications within Moffat’s writing of the character.

We also look towards what’s next for Doctor Who, from the 50th to Christmas to Series 8, and lay out the possibilities for a wager laid down for the future of this very podcast. And finally, we review YOUR comments from our episodes this season. All this and more on the latest TARDISblend!
