NYCC 2015: Kevin Smith

Filmmaker Kevin Smith posted to his social media accounts today that he survived a “massive” heart attack last night after his stand-up performance at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA.

The 47-year-old filmmaker, best known for writing and directing Clerks and Chasing Amy, as well as starring in said films as the latter part of stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob, wrote that he went to the hospital after feeling ill after the first of two planned shows for the night. After cancelling his second performance to seek medical treatment, Smith said that the doctors discovered that he had had a “massive heart attack” with 100% blockage of the LAD artery, aka “the Widow-Maker.”

See below to read Smith’s full Facebook post, where he describes his ordeal and gives his thoughts about this near-death experience.

Jay and Silent Bob

The last four movies that Kevin Smith has worked on as a director—Red State, Tusk, Holidays, and most recently Yoga Hosers—have all been horror movies or have had horror elements. Much different from the comedies and dramedies set in the “View Askewniverse” he’s best known for, such as Clerks, Mallrats, and Dogma. He’s also been involved in a couple of TV shows on The CW recently, directing a couple of episodes of both The Flash and Supergirl.

There’s been talk here and there of returning to his Askewniverse again for Clerks III, a world he hasn’t visited since 2006’s Clerks II. But now Smith has revealed that Clerks III is dead and he’s turned his attention to the most familiar part of the Askewniverse, Jay and Silent Bob, who he’s written a new movie for. Find out what it’s about below.

Midichlorians. The Trade Federation. Watto. The coarseness of sand. Jar-Jar freakin’ Binks. Oh, and you can’t forget”¦. “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!”

George LucasStar Wars prequels comprise what is possibly the most controversial motion picture trilogy of all time. Despite grossing hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office and selling countless DVD and Blu-ray copies, Episodes I through III remain a serious bone of contention for ferociously devoted fans of the Star Wars universe for many reasons.

Bradley Weatherholt‘s Indiegogo-funded documentary The Prequels Strike Back: A Fan’s Journey provides — through a series of insightful and provocative interviews with open-minded admirers of the films and their thematic elements and links to the original trilogy –- a pointed critical analysis of the prequel trilogy’s multitude of perceived narrative and technical flaws. Rather than serve as the set-up for a rude, feature-length rebuttal of the faults that have fueled many a furious blog post or chatroom discussion, detractors of these unjustly-derided intergalactic adventures to look at those faults once more, but placed in different contexts and interpreted through a series of unbiased points-of-view.

Kevin Smith's Yoga Hosers

The first trailer for Clerks, Mallrats, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back director Kevin Smith‘s latest movie, Yoga Hosers, has been released online and it sure is a wacky looking one.

The movie stars Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp as a pair of teenage yoga loving convenience store workers who seek the help of a legendary manhunter named Guy Lapointe (Johnny Depp) when a terrible ancient evil, an invasion of tiny anthropomorphic Nazi bratwurst (played by Smith), threatens the big party they’ve been invited to. See, wacky! It is the second part in Smith’s True North trilogy following Tusk.
