The legend of King Arthur has existed for well over a millennia, and as such has given way to countless interpretations of stories, TV shows, and films. So while we may be familiar with the name, there will always be a new way to look at the legend, a new way to tell the story, and a new way to rake in the cash. So just as superheroes are popular now, Guy Ritchie is giving audiences a reason to look at iconic literary characters. But while his previous efforts from the Sherlock Holmes films to The Man From U.N.C.L.E. may have been richly stylized and highly entertaining, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword suffers from a serious case of style over substance.

Check out the full review below.

Treasure Island

In February we found out that producer Lionel Wigram was behind a new take on the tale of the Three Musketeers would be coming to theaters using the same methods used to successfully reinvent Sherlock Holmes with Guy Ritchie, Robert Downey Jr., and Jude Law.

Now comes word that Wigram isn’t stopping there — the producer is now developing a re-imagining of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island for Warner Brothers. The story has seen a ton of film adaptations over the years, including in 1950 with Robert Newton and Bobby Driscoll, and in 1990 with Charlton Heston and Christian Bale.

The Three Musketeers

Back in June of 2008, we discovered that a new movie was being developed based on the 1844 Alexandre Dumas classic, The Three Musketeers. At the time, not too much was known about the project, and as you can tell, it has been a while since any updates have been offered.

Now, with the title set up and cozy at Warner Brothers, it looks like things are about to set sail. The studio has Producer Lionel Wigram in place, and Peter Straughan has been hired to write the screenplay.

Wigram has done a lot of work with Warner Bros. over the years; he’s had a big hand in the success of the Harry Potter franchise, and was a producer on both Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince. He was also a writer and producer on Guy Ritchie’s new take on Sherlock Holmes, which is crucial because that’s exactly where they want to go with this new Three Musketeers adventure. The hopes and plans are to make it fun and exciting to appeal to younger audiences, and to hopefully score another big franchise out of it.

SDCC 09: Robert Downey Jr at the Sherlock Holmes panelNo one can deny that Robert Downey Jr was the hit of Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con last weekend at both the Iron Man 2 panel and the one for the Warner Bros. upcoming reboot Sherlock Holmes, directed by Guy Ritchie.

Check out the images from the panel, as well as a description of the new footage shown here below.

Foregoing the usual introduction by the moderator, Downey strut onto the stage unannounced, a most pleasant entrance for the audience, and began to explain the Sherlock Holmes character, created 122 years ago by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Downey explained the Holmes was actually the first superhero and an intellectual one at that, and has grown to become most of the most recognizable figures on Earth.

Downey was joined on the panel by producers Joel Silver and Susan Downey (also Robert Downey’s wife), producer/co-writer Lionel Wigram (who created the comic book spec for the film), and Downey’s co-star Rachel McAdams, who plays Irene Alder, Holmes’ love interest and the only women to ever bested the detective.

The panelists made it clear that while making the film, whenever they were in doubt about a situation, they would always go back to Doyle’s source material to see what Doyle said the characters said and how the characters described one another.
