Last time on This Is Us, the mantra was… “Nothing bad ever happens on Christmas Eve.” It was Christmas time for everyone, and in the past, Kate had to get her appendix taken out on Christmas Eve, while Dr. K may be dying. In the present, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) thought his family night would be a wash as everyone seemed to cancel. He went to his office party and literally talked a friend off a ledge. Then all of his family showed up and it was as lovely as you could expect. Even William’s (Ron Cephas Jones) special friend came – Randall’s kid outed him. Kevin (Justin Hartley) went to Sloane’s (Milana Vayntrub) for Chanukah and it was adorable. Kate (Chrissy Metz) was miserable because she had broken up with Toby (Chris Sullivan), who swooped in and declared he could not live without her in front of his family… then crashed into the table later on with what looked like a heart attack. Okay, that part was not so lovely. It left us hanging as to whether Kate would lose her happiness.

Spoilers below.

Last week on This is Us, William told Randall (Ron Cephas Jones, Sterling K. Brown) the story of his beginnings, and we see young William’s desire to find his birth family. Jack and Rebecca (Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore) took William to karate as a child to have black male role models. The siblings went to their family cabin one last time. Kevin invited Olivia (Justin Hartley, Janet Montgomery), but that didn’t work out. Randall accidentally drank a mushroom-laced smoothie and he hallucinates Jack, who still is the best dad ever, allowing Randall to truly understand his mother.

Last week on This Is Us, the family had a rocky Thanksgiving as Randall (Sterling K. Brown) accidentally found out that his mom (Mandy Moore) knew his birth father all along. William (Ron Cephas Jones) is very close to the end and he wanted to make him happy, so he ran to his place to get some cassette tapes and found a letter and a picture… of him as a child. Kate (Chrissy Metz) decided to get gastric bypass surgery after breaking up with Toby (Chris Sullivan) and a harrowing plane ride. Kevin (Justin Hartley) brought Olivia (Janet Montgomery) to Thanksgiving and she had her own lessons to learn.
