‘Captain Marvel’ Origin Story To Be Adjusted Thanks To A Certain Green DC Hero

Captain Marvel

Marvel and DC may have a friendly little rivalry going on in both comics and movies, but they do share their similarities, most notably in their characters. They have rich boy heroes with high-tech gadgets at their disposal. They have speedsters, demi-gods based on mythology, powerful sorcerers, and archers. You get the gist. For the characters that have had their cinematic debut in their respective shared universe, their origins stories haven’t changed much, if at all.

But for Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, which just cast Brie Larson as the title character, it looks like they’re straying away from the comic book’s origin story, and you have the 2011 Green Lantern movie to thank for that. More on the story below.

Captain Marvel

It’s been long wondered which actress would be chosen to take on the title role in Marvel’s Captain Marvel, and we now might have an answer to that question.

It’s being reported that Brie Larson, who just scored herself an Academy Award for her work playing a mother trying to take care of her son while being held captive in the simply titled Room, is the frontrunner for the role and is now in negotiations with Marvel to see if a deal can be agreed upon.

Hasbro Cinematic Universe

Last December, Paramount Pictures announced the development of a shared cinematic universe based on their Hasbro properties – including G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand), Micronauts, Visionairies, and ROM – similar to the one they are currently working on for their extremely lucrative Transformers franchise. The next logical step was to assemble a team of creative samurai to help them foster Hollywood’s latest attempt to one-up Marvel to the silver screen.

The studio just announced that they have put together a jaw-dropping writers’ room that includes Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon (The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Wonder Boys) and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Saga).

‘Inside Out’ Scribe Meg LeFauve Briefly Talks ‘Captain Marvel’ Draft

Captain Marvel Comics Banner

There are a lot of reasons why Meg LeFauve should be celebrating. Inside Out was an instant hit with critics and audiences when it was released last year, making everyone, especially me, well up with tears. And after being recognized and honored with numerous awards, the script, which she co-wrote with co-director Pete Docter, and storyboard supervisor Josh Cooley, has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. So as some are awaiting the results of Hollywood’s biggest night, others are anxiously awaiting to hear more about Marvel Studio’s Captain Marvel.

We are still a good two-plus years away from the release of Captain Marvel. So far no one has been named director, and the studio has yet to find its lead to play the title role. Considering the film is in the very early stages of development we probably won’t be getting that kind of news anytime soon. But LeFauve did offer little nuggets of information in regards to the development of the script, and the pressures that come with writing a female superhero and proving female superheroes can carry the full weight of a movie on their own, and so much more. Check out what she had to say below.

Jim Henson's Labyrinth Goblins

In October of 2014 we shared with you news that Labyrinth, the 1986 movie directed by the late, great Jim Henson, could be getting a sequel. Many were excited by the news, but it was then reported not long after that that sources had denied that a sequel to the puppet filled fantasy flick was actually being made. And we all moved on.

Though fans were excited about the thought of another adventure in the labyrinth with all of our favorite characters, including Jareth the Goblin King (played by David Bowie), prepare for some news you might not be so excited about. It’s now being reported that, not even two weeks after Bowie left us forever, a reboot of Labyrinth is in the works.

The latest name to enter the competition for the coveted title role in Marvel Studios’ first female-fronted superhero adventure Captain Marvel is an unexpected cause for surprise, but a damn great choice if it turns out to be true.

According to Heroic Hollywood’s Umberto Gonzalez, Rebecca Ferguson, the Swedish actress who starred as Queen Elizabeth in the acclaimed 2013 Starz miniseries The White Queen and impressed audiences all around the world as the conflicted British spy Ilsa Faust in this summer’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is rumored to be in contention for the role of the galactic superheroine also known by her Earthbound alter ego Carol Danvers.

Captain Marvel Logo

The Avengers: Age of Ultron press conference was held this past weekend, and there will no doubt be a lot of news on that film as well as those in Phase 3 being posted in the next few weeks. It has already been confirmed that the Russo brothers will be directing both parts of Avengers: Infinity War using a script from Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The two will also be working on Captain America: Civil War. The studio will no doubt be working on the scripts and finding the appropriate people to write and direct these films. And a new report says that the studio is closing in on a couple of writers to pen the Captain Marvel script.

They may not be the most recognizable names at first, but they have huge credits. First is Nicole Perlman, who wrote a draft of Guardians of the Galaxy — she also came from the Marvel screenwriting program — and Pixar’s Inside Out co-writer Meg LeFauve. Hit the jump for more.

Second Opinion: ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Movie Review

Guardians of the Galaxy

If you really want to see a totally ass-kicking space fantasy adventure movie that is well-written and produced, with characters you care about from start to finish, then go see Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Based on the Marvel comic of the same name, it’s the action flick of the year, hands-down.

Peter Quill, aka Star Lord (Chris Pratt) has found a mysterious orb that holds the key to the salvation – or destruction – of an entire planet and the race of people who live on it. Chased by the henchmen of Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and with a bounty on his head, he encounters Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a killer raised by the mysterious character Thanos (Josh Brolin), as well as Rocket (Bradley Cooper), a self-aware raccoon who’s the product of genetic experimentation. Rocket’s accomplice is the giant enigmatic plant-being Groot (Vin Diesel), whose vocabulary is seemingly limited to the three words “I am Groot.” Arrested by Nova HQ and sentenced to prison, the group encounters Drax the Destroyer (David Bautista), whose family was killed by Ronan, and who has sworn to avenge their deaths.

James Gunn Returning For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2’

Guardians Of The Galaxy Poster Header

Guardians of the Galaxy, the latest feature from Marvel Studios, currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based off of 25 reviews. Do you know how difficult it is to get that perfect of a rating? Only the truest classics and greatest films of all time are able to reach that magic number. Plus there are many films beloved by all that barely crack the 90s. The rating might drop a bit as the film gets closer to its theatrical release next week, but right now Guardians stands a mighty chance at being one of the best-reviewed motion pictures of 2014 and one of the most successful August releases in history. And seeing as how this is a Marvel movie, naturally Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is being discussed.

Though a sequel has not been officially announced yet (Marvel could still make the announcement at their Saturday Comic-Con panel), they’re confident enough that the first will do well enough to warrant a second entry, and they want Gunn to return for it. Continue reading for more.
