‘Star Trek Beyond’ Remembers Leonard Nimoy (Video)

Leonard Nimoy - Mr. Spock

Back in July we found out that Star Trek Beyond, the third entry in the rebooted Star Trek movie franchise, was doing a contest for a chance to win a role in the movie (similar to what former Trek director J.J. Abrams and company did for Star Wars: The Force Awakens) all in the name of charity.

That contest is in its last week, and to make the final stretch special it was decided to dedicate the week to the great Leonard Nimoy, the Star Trek legend who sadly passed away back in February. The contest benefits many charities but in order to honor Nimoy, a charity that he cared deeply for, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is being spotlighted.

A short video was released to announce the news and remember Nimoy, with current Spock actor Zachary Quinto fittingly front and center. You can watch the video below.

Star Trek Beyond Contest

Remember when that video was released with Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams standing in front of a full-size X-wing to announce a contest for charity in which the winner would score a walk-on role in the movie? Well, those of you who prefer the Star Trek universe now have the same opportunity.

It’s been announced that a similar contest is now live that will lead to someone winning a walk-on role in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, the rebooted movie franchise’s trilogy-maker. Better yet, those who don’t win the big prize can still win a set visit. The contest is done in a crowdfunding style, where you obtain entries in the contest by purchasing perks, which is a big plus. Instead of blindly throwing $10 in and hoping you win, $10 gets you a digital badge and 100 chances to win. $50 gets you a digital thank you video from the cast and crew of the movie and 500 entries. $10,000 to $15,000 gets you props from the three most recent Trek movies and 100,000 to 150,000 entries. But good luck competing with the person who drops $100,000 for a replica captain’s chair and 1,000,000 entries.

You can get all the details about the contest below, and also watch a video of the cast (Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, and newcomer Idris Elba) announcing the contest, which, by the way, ends with a little dance party.

J.J. Abrams On Star Wars: Episode VII Set Image

The first video from the set of Star Wars: Episode VII has been released, but not for the purposes of showing off the movie. The video is to announce an exciting new contest in which one lucky fan will win a trip to London where they’ll be a VIP guest of director J.J. Abrams, meet the cast, see the movie being filmed, and even get the full makeup and costume treatment before filming an actual scene for the movie. That’s right, you could be in a Star Wars movie. Better yet, the contest is to benefit a good cause.

But since all but one person and their friend of choice will get to experience this, the rest of us have to look for something else to be excited about in the video. Enter random alien cameo appearance! Some kind of elderly creature—likely to be one of the many going about their business during a scene in the movie—shows up while Abrams is talking. And while cool, the most exciting part is that it’s a real practical effects creation, hopefully a subtle hint at restrained use of digital effects in Episode VII.

Continue below to check out the video and find out where to enter the contest.
