Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim proved to be more of a hit overseas than it did here in the States, and because of that, there is a slim chance that we could be seeing a sequel. But if we do indeed get a sequel, Del Toro would no doubt dip into the pool of ideas he had in store for this film – even though the ending of the first Pacific Rim suggests that the film was to be a one and done.

Now, Charlie Day has come out to talk about his character and how it was originally envisioned differently than what was seen on screen.

At first glance, Pacific Rim had very little impact at the box office. In fact it has joined a long line of recent summer box office busts that include films like White House Down, The Lone Ranger, and even The Wolverine. But the international numbers tell a different story.

Guillermo del Toro‘s film debuted in China Wednesday and grossed an estimated $9 million at the box office. According to Deadline, that’s a new high for any Warner Brothers release and 23% bigger than for any Harry Potter film. The film also was the number one film in international markets the July 19-21st weekend. With the international numbers speaking volumes, it’s very likely that a sequel to Pacific Rim could happen.

The massive monsters versus robots movie, Pacific Rim, is still many months away, but Legendary Pictures is clearly high on the movie and are trying to keep director Guillermo del Toro on their team for as long as possible.

It’s being reported that the studio already has plans for Pacific Rim 2, and that del Toro and the first movie’s writer, Travis Beacham, are already set to begin working on the screenplay for the follow-up.
