Dynamite Entertainment continues its string of hit comics featuring pulp heroes with Miss Fury #1! Can it measure up to their other genre titles? Let’s take a look.
Wow. Rob Williams knows how to confuse AND entertain you in this book. On one page, even. I have to say, I REALLY enjoyed this book. It’s unlike anything that Dynamite is publishing today. Yes, it is part of Dynamite’s Pulp Heroes line, but that’s where the similarities to the rest of the line ends. This issue is literally all over the place, and it couldn’t be more enjoyable. I was shocked at how Miss Fury #1 was written: cliffhangers, mysteries, good old fashioned super heroics, fun, it’s really got it all. Not only do you get a fantastic adventure that finishing with a great cliffhanger ending, Williams also manages to sneak in a FULL and COMPLETE origin story into the issue about halfway through.

The Bionic Woman #3
Written by Paul Tobin

Letters by Simon Bowland
Cover by Paul Renaud
Dynamite Entertainment
Release Date: August 29, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99
Comics don’t come more action packed then The Bionic Woman #3. From start to finish, you don’t really get a chance to catch your breath. I’ll be honest, I’m a mark for Steve Austin and Jaime Sommers, but I can’t get over how GREAT this comic is. It’s very far removed from your average licensed spin-off.
Writer Paul Tobin makes you forget that this is a licensed comic. He turns in the latest chapter in a fantastic story that takes Jaime all over the globe, in search of a team of people who are stealing body parts to sell to the highest bidder. And now, they want to go after Jaime and her bionic limbs. The action is fast and furious and Tobin does some GREAT characterization this issue. Even though Jaime’s lost most, if not all, of her memory, Tobin really gives us a sense of just who she is and what she wants and what she’s fighting for.

Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist #5 is a big-budget action movie contained within a single issue comic book. Honestly, this book is one of THE most action-packed comics out there right now, and if you’re not reading it, you’re really missing out. Another FANTASTIC issue by Eric Trautmann. Now, I know in my reviews that I’ve given almost sole credit for the writing on this book to him, but that’s only because I have no clue as to what degree Alex Ross was involved in the plot. Either way, it totally works and I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
This issue takes place both on Mongo and on Earth, and as I said before, this really reminds me of a big budget sci-fi movie in comic form. You can HEAR the dialogue coming out of the characters’ mouths. You can SEE the action, explosions, and other worldly adventures in your mind. This, is truly a great comic for anyone who wants to escape reality for 15 minutes. Without going into spoilers, there’s some pretty important things that take place in this issue and a moment that we all knew was coming, yet Trautmann still manages to shock us with it when it happens.

Poor Jamie Summers. In Bionic Woman #2, she really gets put to the test of her new “powers.” This after thinking she lost her long-time boyfriend, Steve Austin, in a tragic explosion, then surviving an accident that left her almost dead. But thankfully, she got better. Better…stronger…faster.
Author Paul Tobin knows how to write two things really well: women and action. In a world where the only super powers that the main character has is being “really strong” Tobin makes this book exciting and intriguing all at the same time. Yes, being a cyborg isn’t really a huge super power in the current comic universe, but what I love about this is that Tobin MAKES it awesome in this world. One thing that I really like about the character of Jamie Summers is that she doesn’t feel sorry for herself. There’s no “I’m a machine, not a woman” tears or breakdowns or anything like that. Just straight-up butt kicking!

Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist #4 is why action/Sci-Fi comics were invented. Yes, I’m a total sucker for Flash Gordon, but that actually makes it HARDER to impress me when it comes to the property. I’ve seen SO many Flash Gordon reincarnations that have fallen so flat, and reading this book is a welcome return to one of my favorite super heroes ever.
Writer Eric Trautmann lays it on pretty thick in this issue. Talk about jam-packed!!! This is truly an old fashioned cliffhanger serial in comic book form. With a cliffhanger on almost every page, it’s a thrill a minute read that will have you biting your fingernails as you read it. What I love about this book is that every character is off on their own adventure, yet the story still weaves together.
