More Danger Lurks In The Water With The Announcement Of ‘Piranha 3D – THE SEQUEL’

Dimension Films’ Piranha 3D has been a hot topic as of late. Since seeing the first trailer, moviegoers have anticipated the film in hopes of some good old fashioned monster movie carnage.

Upon its release this past weekend, the movie only made $10 million in its opening weekend — a little under half of its budget — but by the time its theatrical run is complete and the movie makes a run on DVD and Blu-ray, it should make that back and more. The most important thing is that critically Piranha 3D has been surprisingly loved (it has a fresh rating of over 80% going for it at Rotten Tomatoes) and the movie has delivered on all its campy gory promises.

With all of that said, Dimension has decided to keep the party moving. It has been officially announced that Piranha 3D — The Sequel is now on the way. Producer Mark Canton, when speaking of the announcement, said “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving PIRANHA 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

Spoiler Talk: Piranha 3D

Piranha 3DThis weekend saw quite a bit of movies released, none of which seemed particularly interesting, but one did pique my interest: Piranha 3D, a reimagining of the 1978 Roger Corman feature Piranha. While the original film was an attempt to hitch a ride on the success of Jaws, this new film is instead riding the wave of the recent 3D phenomenon.

Typically, when I find out a movie is in 3D, it actually makes me NOT want to go see it, as today’s 3D is more for high-definition picture quality, whereas I grew up in a time where 3D meant a harpoon was coming right at your face and that’s the 3D I want. Piranha 3D promised me this ‘gotcha’ 3D.

As far as the film’s subject matter, I must admit I’ve been intrigued by those South America fish with a penchant for flesh ever since thrash metal giants Exodus sang about piranha on their 1985 debut album. Of course, I was probably compelled by the song’s reference to them as “Loki’s children,” trapped in the depths of Hell brought up to one day waste mankind. But I was introduced to these deadly creatures nevertheless and the fascination began.

It helped a lot that Piranha 3D, directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hill Have Eyes remake), boasts a cast of Richard Dreyfess, Elisabeth Shue, and Christopher Lloyd, right there enough to get to me go see the film.

If you’ve seen Piranha 3D, then it’s time for some SPOILER TALK.

Continue reading for my SPOILER-filled thoughts on the movie, and feel free to leave your thoughts in the Comments section below.

Video: The Cast Of ‘Piranha 3D’ Pleads Their Case For An Oscar

A new video has been released featuring many of the actors from this weekend’s Piranha 3D. The cast has gathered to make a case for why their new movie deserves at least one Academy Award for their efforts. Best Picture, Best Actor/Actress, Best Animated Feature — they have an argument for why all would be acceptable and deserved.

In the video you’ll see Jerry O’Connell (who’s character has some lawsuit trouble stirred up), Adam Scott, Jessica Szohr, Riley Steele, Paul Scheer, and the lovely Kelly Brook (my gods, that accent).

Clearly this is just a joke (or is it…), but the video is really, really funny, and well worth a couple minutes of your time — especially if you were able to see the movie this weekend. Once again, there may be what some would consider a spoiler toward the beginning…but again-again, it’s Piranha 3D, folks. Click on over to check out the video now!

Piranha 3DSince it’s going to be the movie subject of this week’s Flix of Doom podcast, the majority of the Doom crew will be heading out in full force to see Piranha 3D tonight.

Which movie will you go see this weekend?

The Switch, a rom-com starring Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, and a turkey baster filled with… something.

Piranha 3D, a campy reimagining of the Roger Corman b-horror classic, containing a plethora of 3D blood and boobs.

Vampires Suck, a facetious Twilight-esque farce that’s sure to live up to its own name?

Nanny McPhee Return, Emma Thompson is back in the ugly mask and bent on doing some Victorian-style good.

Lottery Ticket, where not-so-little Bow Wow strikes it rich and has to dodge the entire cast of Next Friday to claim his winnings?
