George Lucas At Disneyland

George Lucas going indie for the rest of his filmmaking career? I’ll believe it when I see it, but hey, that’s exactly what the director/lightning rod has revealed as his plan going further.

In a profile in the New York Times, the filmmaker’s producing partner, Rick McCallum, reveals that “he will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker,” with Lucas departing from blockbuster titles and going on to make films that are described as being “..small in scope, esoteric in subject and screened mostly in art houses. They’ll be like the experimental movies Lucas made in the 1960s, around the time he was at U.S.C. film school, when he recorded clouds moving over the desert and made a movie based on an E. E. Cummings poem.”

Red Tails

Star Wars creator and master money-maker George Lucas stopped by The Daily Show recently to chat with Jon Stewart about his upcoming WWII passion project, Red Tails. Lucas has been working hard to get the movie made for over two decades now, but, as you’ll hear in the video, faced many hurdles in succeeding, including most major studios not wanting to take on a big budget risk with an almost entirely black cast and a movie they didn’t think could be marketed in foreign markets.

But as always, the conversation found its way to Star Wars as Lucas compared the two, and an interesting announcement was made. You can read more and check out the video of George Lucas on The Daily Show below.

Back in April of 2009, we found out about the impressive cast being put together for a movie called Red Tails, which was being produced by George Lucas and his Lucasfilms banner. Now, over two years later, a trailer for the movie has been released, and you can see if for yourself below.

The movie tells the story of a group of African American dogfighters known as the Tuskegee Airmen, who built an incredible reputation during World War II for getting the job done, but weren’t always allowed anywhere near the action due to the racist policies of the time period.

Red Tails

In case you’ve never heard of it, George Lucas has had a movie called Red Tails that he’s wanted to make for many, many years now. This movie would be set in World War II and tell the story of the Tuskegee Airmen. Now, it’s beginning to look like Lucas finally has the pieces that he’s been waiting for to move forward on the project.

The newest additions to the cast are WWII movie veteran Cuba Gooding Jr. and rapper/actor Method Man. They join a cast that already includes the former War Machine-to-be Terrence Howard, Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston, Ne-Yo, and a chunk of the cast of The Wire in Tristan Wilds, Rick Otto, Michael B. Jordan and Stacie Davis. The movie is to be directed by Anthony Hemingway, who has all kinds of TV show experience, but little in the world of film. He’s been heavily involved in The Wire (explaining the group of cast from the show being used here), acting as Director for two of the episodes as well as an Assistant Director on 23 other episodes. He’s also directed episodes of ER, CSI (NY and Miami), True Blood, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica.
