Matt Reeves

Audiences won’t get to see Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the latest sequel in the long-running sci-fi franchise, until this summer, but 20th Century Fox must surely be happy with how the anticipated film is shaping up because they have signed Dawn director Matt Reeves to both co-write and direct the next Apes adventure.

Reeves, who also directed Cloverfield and Let Me In, will share scripting duties on the third entry in the rebooted Apes franchise that was reborn with the surprising success of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes with Mark Bomback. The original screenplay for Dawn was written by Rise scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver and went through rewrites by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) and Bomback. In addition to this summer’s smashing X-flick The Wolverine, Bomback has also worked on the scripts for Live Free or Die Hard, Tony Scott’s final movie Unstoppable, and last summer’s Total Recall remake.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Trailer Header Image

Rise of the Planet of the Apes ended on a bittersweet note. Caesar (Andy Serkis) had evolved his fellow apes at an unexpectedly fast pace, and a stealthy killer virus was being spread throughout the world. Now 20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which shows us just how far humanity has fallen, and how apes have risen up to be the dominate species.

But how well has humanity fared since those events have transpired, and are the apes really off in a better place now that they have established themselves as the dominate species? You’ll just have to hit the trailer below to find out.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Banner

Pictured above is the new logo for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel to Rupert Wyatt’s 2011 film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The film, directed by Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield), will document the further development of Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his tribe of genetically-evolved apes.

Pictured below is our first look at Reeves’ film and it features apes riding horses, just like in Charlton Heston’s original 1968 classic, Planet of the Apes. The photo, which Reeves tweeted on Friday, shows a meeting between the human resistance, led here by Zero Dark Thirty and The Great Gatsby star Jason Clarke, and the apes, led by Andy Serkis in a mo-cap suit on horseback.

Judy Greer In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Judy Greer is set to reunite with her 13 Going On 30 co-star Andy Serkis as the new female lead in Matt Reeve‘s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. But it’s not the type of female lead you may be thinking. While Keri Russell has landed the female human lead role, Greer will play the female ape lead.

Vulture reports that in addition to providing the voice for the Cornelia, she will also do the motion capture performances. Greer isn’t known for her motion capture work, but she has plenty of experience in the voice over department, her most notable work can be seen on the hit FX animated comedy Archer, which has just been extended for a fifth season. According to the report it was Serkis who convinced Greer auction for the part.
