Steven Spielberg’s ‘Robopocalypse’ Delay Is Real, But Only For A Moment

ROBOPOCALYPSE

News of an indefinite delay on Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse would have been devastating to the project, but it turns out the film might not be in that much trouble. With stars Chris Hemsworth and Anne Hathaway set to begin filming in the Spring, slight problems with the Drew Goddard script, which is based on Daniel H. Wilson’s popular sci-fi novel, prompted Spielberg and his team to halt production indefinitely until they could figure out the problems with it.

However, Spielberg says things have been blown out of proportion and even though the delay is real, the movie will commence production before too much time elapses.

The root of the problem was that the script was calling for a lot of money to be spend, so Spielberg wants to find a way to make a film with a more economically friendly script that is also more personal.

Ben Whishaw as Q Header

Following the news that Anne Hathaway will be starring opposite Chris Hemsworth in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Robopocalypse, comes word that Cloud Atlas star Ben Whishaw is now being courted for a role in the film. The British actor, who also has a role in the upcoming James Bond film Skyfall, would play a hacker named Lurker.

Variety reports that no deal has been made, but the offer is on the table for Whishaw to take. Barring any scheduling conflicts, it would be hard for Whisaw to pass on a project with Spielberg at the helm. The director is expected to begin production later this year after he finishes his press rounds for Lincoln. Former 20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Tom Rothman will produce the film and Drew Goddard will write the screenplay adaptation.

Anne Hathaway

Steven Spielberg has an idea on whom he would like to see take the two lead roles in his long-gestating adaptation of Robopocalypse. It’s been reported that Spielberg would like to see Chris Hemsworth play the male lead in the upcoming film and now there is word that Spielberg is looking to Anne Hathaway to play the female lead. In addition to these possible castings, there is confirmation that former 20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Tom Rothman will be a producer for Robopocalypse.

According to Deadline, the studio is tightlipped about any news concerning the casting of lead roles in Robopocalypse. But the fact that Hathaway and Hemsworth could share the silver screen is an exciting thought. We will be likely to hear confirmation of the two being cast in the weeks leading up to the start of principle photography, which is scheduled to begin early 2013.

Steven Spielberg's War Horse

Who better to force two studios to team up than one Steven Spielberg.

According to THR, both Fox and DreamWorks will be co-financing Spielberg’s upcoming sci-fi film, Robopocalypse. The film will be hitting theaters on July 3, 2013, and will be based on the novel penned by Daniel H. Wilson.

The story follows “the fate of the human race following a robot uprising,” and while the premise may sound cliche, the idea of Spielberg jumping back into the world of sci-fi action films really makes this one project to keep a huge eye on.

A while back, Steven Spielberg was interested in directing an adaptation of the unfinished science fiction novel from author Daniel H. Wilson, Robopocalypse. At the time, the director instead chose to take on his next project, War Horse, but it looks like Spielberg is now ready to return for some hostile robot takeover action.

According to sources, Spielberg has now committed to directing Robopocalypse as his next film. The director was so keen on taking this movie on, that he even began developing it and working on storyboards despite the fact that the book was incomplete and that he decided to do War Horse first.

‘Robopocalypse’ Looks To Offer A Realistic Look At Machine’s Takeover Of Man

Terminators

We’ve certainly seen the story before: high technology machines and robots evolve, rise up, and take over the world of men. Whether it’s Battlestar Galactica, the Terminator franchise, or a movie like I, Robot, people love being scared by the thought of man-made machines turning on us and killing us all. If this trend is kept up, the robot apocalypse could become a genre in itself like zombies, but that isn’t stopping DreamWorks, who are on the verge of acquiring the rights to an unpublished manuscript entitled Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson.

So what makes this project so attractive? What makes Robopocalypse different from the other movies that we’ve seen? Well, it’s realism. Wilson is an actual Ph.D. in robotics, and he has injected a massive level of realism into his tale of man vs. machine, which is what immediately grabbed DreamWorks’ attention. Over the past few years, there have been some terrifying videos of actual man-made robots that are so freaky-realistic, you almost expect them to evolve and slaughter mankind.

Click over to see one video example of how robots are close to taking over the world!
