immortals graphic novel

Good news comes this week for one of our favorite indie publishers, Archaia Entertainment, as they recently announced a very special collaboration with film company Relativity Media. Archaia will be publishing a hardcover graphic novel anthology based on the story set up in Relativity’s upcoming 3D epic, Immortals, which stars Henry Cavill, best known right now as the man who will be Superman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming reboot.

The Immortals graphic novel is slated for a September 2011 date as a precursor to the film’s November 11th release that will expand on the characters and story from the film, and has some extremely popular creative names attached from the comic world as well, including David Mack, Ron Marz, Ben Templesmith, and Dennis Calero. The book will be released through Archaia’s Black Label imprint which is focused more on working on collaborations with several entertainment industries.

Witchblade Vol 8Witchblade
Volume 8: War of the Witchblades
Written By Ron Marz
Art by Stjepan Sejic
Top Cow Productions
Release Date: September 14, 2010

I have been reading Witchblade on and off for the last 2 years now. Although all of it has been in trade format, it would be hard to find at least over 130 single issues. But that would be crazy, unless you had the time, money, and resources to make it happen. But believe me, trades are the way to go for catching up on almost anything if possible. Witchblade is a unique idea that I first learned about a couple of years ago when I saw the TV show. Later on I then discovered it was based on a comic book series, and it made me want to pick it up to see what it was like. And I was not disappointed.

Witchblade Volume 8 is called “War of the Witchblades” and it means just that. Sara Pezzini at one point was the sole bearer of the Witchblade, which is a powerful and ancient weapon in the form of a gauntlet which balances the forces between light and darkness. Dani Baptiste became the new bearer of the Witchblade when Sara discovered she was pregnant a couple trades ago. She decided the only way to keep her baby safe was to let go of the mystical weapon. But since the events of “First Born,” Sara and Dani decided to each share a half of the Witchblade and its powers.

Top Cow: Angelus, Issue #3Angelus #3
Written by Ron Marz
Art by Stjepan Sejic
Letters by Troy Peteri
Top Cow Productions
Price: $2.99
Release Date: April 14, 2010

When they say beauty is an eternal thing, they weren’t kidding. Meet the Angelus, they are the warriors for the side of light, one of a few that wield some of the most powerful forces in the universe, the other main two being the Witchblade and the Darkness (which are also two of the other major titles out by Top Cow Productions right now).

Danielle Baptiste could be considered your average woman, except for one thing: she is the current vessel for The Angelus, a source of power that embodies the bearer with the force of light. Before this though she had once held the power of the Witchblade, but those days are behind her. Danielle is returning home to New Orleans for a change and to reconnect with family. And to top it all off, Mardi Gras is going on at the same time. This of course means partying, parades, and costumes. But there is something else waiting for Danielle there, something that is hiding in the dark. Will the power of the Angelus be enough to fight off what awaits her? Or is her homecoming a death sentence?

Magdalena #1The Magdalena #1
Written by Ron Marz
Pencils by Nelson Blake II

Letters by Troy Peteri
Top Cow
Price: $3.99
Release date: April 21, 2010

Finally Ron Marz, known for his other recent Top Cow work on Witchblade and Broken Trinity, got his wish to work on The Magdalena and wow did he start off great. I really was blown away by this first issue of the new run. It isn’t very easy to please everyone with a first issue, but I think Marz did a great job of mixing in references to the old material as well as inform new readers of what they’re in for. Doing all this while peppering in characterization for all of the main cast shows just how much love Marz has for the series.

Let me start off by telling you what The Magdalena is about. After the death and rise of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene, who was said by a few to be his wife, had a daughter. From this daughter started the line of Magdalena, which is the royal bloodline. Each daughter is trained as a warrior to protect the Catholic Church and carries the title of Magdalena, which entitles them to weild the Spear of Destiny — the spear that pierced Jesus in the side — as their weapon against evil.

Witchblade #135Witchblade #134 & #135
Almost Human: Parts 1 & 2 (of 3)
Written by Ron Marz
Art by Stjepan Sejic
Letters by Troy Peteri
Top Cow
Price: $2.99
Release date: March 03, 2010 [#135]

I came to Witchblade armed with nothing but Wikipedia and an open mind, and as such, I concede that great chunks of the story probably went over my head. But long-running series like this one can’t do well unless new readers can come in a hundred issues in and still find something to appreciate. While I didn’t find the experience unpleasant, there wasn’t much that compelled me to explore further, either.

A quick summary for the other noobs out there: Witchblade centers around Sara Pezzini, an NYPD detective and the current wielder of said Witchblade, a powerful supernatural weapon that can shift its shape to protect and aid the user. These two issues in particular, #134 and #135, are the first two books of a three-part arc about Sara tracking down the green-haired cyborg assassin called Aphrodite IV, who works for the shadowy, uncreatively named organization Cyberdata.

Top Cow
Release date: December 23, 2009

First of all, I’d like to know why it’s always the same people who get all the super powers. The same girl gets to be TWO superheroes, and I get squat. It’s completely unfair.

Spinning out of Top Cow’s Witchblade, Angelus follows the continuing story of Danielle Baptiste, former police officer and superhero Witchblade, as she relocates from New York to New Orleans. The relocation has more to do with just a change in scenery: she has now become Angelus, warrior of the Eternal Light, and with her new lesbian lover Finch, she is trying to navigate her new path in life. But she may be caught up in something she doesn’t understand. Her angel second in command Sabine plots behind her back and dispatches a team of warriors into the depths of Hell to retrieve a mysterious object.
