In 1988, at a screening for religious leaders of his new film The Last Temptation of Christ, Martin Scorsese was approached by Archbishop Paul Moore, the Episcopal Bishop of New York, who presented the filmmaker with a copy of ShÅ«saku Endō‘s acclaimed novel Silence.

Published in 1966, the novel is the story of Jesuit missionaries sent to 17th century Japan, where they endure persecution in the time of Kakure Kirishitan (“Hidden Christians”) that followed the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion, an uprising of Catholic Christian peasants during the Tokugawa shogunate’s rule.

Martin Scorsese‘s long-awaited film adaptation of Silence is finally coming at the end of the year. Now we are finally getting our first look at the film.

Paramount has revealed the first trailer for the film starring Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver as Jesuit priests who travel to Feudal Japan to find their mentor (Liam Neeson) in an area where Christianity is outlawed and their presence is forbidden. Check out the first trailer and a poster below.

Paramount Pictures has finally set a release date for Silence, Martin Scorsese‘s long-awaited directorial effort following his award-winning The Wolf of Wall Street.

It has been so long since there has been anything to report that it seemed like the film would be put on hold for a later release. But now there is word that it will be hitting theaters this December, just in time for a nice Oscar campaign. Check out more on the story below.

Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe Confirmed To Join Martin Scorsese’s ‘Silence’

From social media platform mogul to webslinging hero, Andrew Garfield‘s stock has yet to reach its peak, and now the actor will add another project to his resume that will surely bring his name up a few more ticks. Variety broke the news that the actor will star alongside Ken Watanabe in Martin Scorsese‘s adaptation of Shusaku Endo‘s novel Silence. Like the novel, the film will center on Jesuits who spread Christianity in 17th century Japan.

Garfield will play Father Rodriguez, one of the priests who will attempt to spread the word of the Gospel, while Watanabe will play the priest’s interpeter. The report says that as soon as Scorsese completes his work on The Wolf of Wall Street, which is scheduled for a December release, he would start to film Silence in Summer 2014 for a holiday 2015 release.

Actor Charles Napier

Charles Napier, an iconic character actor who specialized in playing stern authority figures and various tough guy roles in an acting career in film and television that spanned more than four decades, passed away today at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield, CA. He was 75.

Born in 1936 in Scottsville, Kentucky, Napier served in the U.S. Army in the 11th Airborne Division before becoming an actor in the late 1960’s. One of Napier’s first acting roles was playing a space hippie on the Star Trek original series episode “A Way to Eden.” He later became a favorite actor of director Russ Meyer and appeared in his films Cherry, Harry, and Racquel!, The Seven Minutes, Supervixens, and Meyer’s mind-blowing magnum opus Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
